"Does being a Biology major increase your chances of getting into a top med-school?"

yes only because you'll be taking more biology related courses, and the MCAT will be testing on these subjects. otherwise, there's no single major that will "increase your chances"... most popular "pre-med" major is biochemistry followed by english. yes english.

i got in for human biology at ucsd and biological sciences at ucd. i want to get into med-school. is ucsd significantly better? if i applied myself equally would it matter which college i go to? should i just go to the campus i like better or is ucsd so much better academically that i should go to ucsd?

gpa is very important bio is a good major but u can do mol. bio or human bio etc as long as it is in the biological sciences its fine or if u do the med school requirements.

ucsd has that whole med scholars thing, but if you don't want to do it, you can just go into biomedical engineering.. but the whole thing about college is that you can pick something you actually WANT to learn about as your major. just as long as you fulfill all the requirements for the med school you want to go to, you can major in anything you want. i think the same goes for pre-law and business people as well..

Does it really matter which UC I go to as long as my GPA is high and my MCAT's are good? My parents really want me to go to UCB even though I have been admitted to all other UC's. If I get good grades, do good on MCAT's and fulfill all the requirements for Med-School, would a Physics or another non-bio degree make a difference?

uclover: If you're going by US News Ranking, which most people go by on this forum, in terms of research medical schools, UCLA ranks a respectable 14th (compared to the 1 and 3 of the other 2) while in terms of primary care medical schools, UCLA ranks 23rd compared to Harvard's 42nd. Although there's a huge discrepency in the perception of both Harvard and UCLA's undergraduate schools, medical school is completely different. Even if you have the stats, you need to be spectacular all around to even think about being considered admissions to either of the 3 medical schools.

I think UCSD is better than UCLA for some reason im not biased or anything but i thnk ucsd is better for pre-med but UCLA has an awesome med school

my bro went to UCSD and majored in bio and currently attends UCSF med school. What he says: UCSD has a great bio program and excellent research opportunities, but is very cutthroat. It's a research-oriented school, so teaching isn't a huge priority for many professors.
