which university's or college's ART program is good? i am an art student so i would like to attend a college that has great art programs. what about Middlebury? Wesleyan?

The truth is that the art programs at most schools will pale in comparison to those at actual art schools.

But at the same time, an art program isn't necessarily all about the department. A lot of the success depends on YOU and your talent and dedication.

If you're looking to study art seriously but be around some non-art majors, look into Carnegie Mellon.

alice, I'm not sure that I would include Middlebury in a list of top art departments. Great school otherwise though.

Wesleyan is very strong. Others in the small LAC category would be Williams, Conn College, Vassar, Bard, Skidmore, Kenyon, Oberlin. If you are female, Smith. Williams also has an excellent art history department (as do many of the others) and access to three world class museums which is complementary to the studio program.

Among the ivy league Brown and Yale.

All big universities have big art departments, so you'll have to investigate the strengths and weaknesses of each. Michigan is a good one, but I'm sure there are others. Carnegie Mellon as mentioned is particularly well known for fine art.

You should plan to submit a portfolio as part of your application. Most schools will give you instructions on line under "supplementary materials." Some allow CDs, but most ask for slides.

I'd also suggest putting together an arts package which would include your portfolio, an additional recommendation from an art instructor or mentor, a resume which lists art classes, awards, accomplishments, travel opportunities, a personal statement.

Good luck and let us know how you do.

you're not at all interested in SCAD, Parson's, Pratt, or RISD?

Apply to art colleges if you want to go into art, plain and simple. Look into RISD, MICA, SAIC, SCAD, etc.

if you go to brown you can take classes at RISD, so that might be the best of both worlds.

thank you all.....i wonder whether schools like RISD, MICA, SAIC, SCAD...have financial aid for internatioinal students....i guess it is very hard to get that...

A friend of mine goes to MICA and loves it.

I'll also second the rec. for Carnegie Mellon.

I'm not sure if you're looking into a strictly actual art school, but my sister went to Tyler School of Art, the professors are highly respected in their field and she's had no problem finding any jobs after graduating. She currently works for Laggo's as a jewelry designer.

i like Carnegie Mello a lot but it doesnt offer or very few FA for international stduents....

alice, Williams has good need based financial aid for internationals, but it's very selective -- somewhat more so than Middlebury and Wesleyan.

I'd suggest that you post your questions about financial aid at art schools on the Arts Majors discussion board as you will get more replies from experienced students and parents thereof.

What about Syracuse? Great art and graphic design programs. My friend who does art at CMU had Syr as her second choice.

Bennington is a liberal arts college but because of it's open academic system you can take mostly art classes. It's art facilities are incredible (and open 24 hours!) and the professors are often working/acclaimed artists and therefore can give you helpful professional advice. You can also take art history classes at nearby Williams college if you are enrolled at Bennington.

Thank you...your suggestions are very helpful!

Huhm, if you guys don't mind me butting in, I have the same question, only more so for the west coast?

Cause I like art, but would also like to keep options open. [especially since the 'rents and relatives are all anti-art school]

One idea might be Evergreen State College-- I have no idea how good their art program is, but they offer art "programs," as well as other things. A lot of my artier friends are there.

Virginia Commonwealth University, more commonly known as VCU in Richmond, VA

its art programs are consistently ranked top in graduate rankings. but it's a big school with like 30000 kids or so.

something to consider

poftd, I know it's a strictly art school, but CalArts is amazing. If you're at all interested in the arts and would like to live near LA, it's top notch. Another school that comes to mind is Stanford, which has a good art dept, but admission might be difficult.
