Which WUE schools are good?

OP, Montana State is actually better than University of Montana in many, many fields. It used to be harder to get into, as well.

@mamaedefamilia Thanks so much for letting me know about those amazing factors! =) I liked it a lot but I talked to this student there online and he said it’s in a bad neighborhood. My parents are iffy on me going OOS, so if they see it’s in a bad neighborhood, I fear they’ll use it against me. Do you know anything about that – the safety aspect? :slight_smile:

I don’t know about the neighborhood around UNM, but I let my daughter apply there (don’t know yet where she’ll end up going). On-campus housing is guaranteed, so you don’t have to venture off campus all the time. There are LOTS of colleges in bad neighborhoods including many big name highly respected institutions like Hopkins, Brown, Temple.

And I wouldn’t take one student’s perception as the absolute truth. I did a lot of research on UNM before D applied and did not see any references to bad neighborhood.

With your stats and WUE, at University of New Mexico, you’ll get to pay the equivalent in-state tuition, like my D, rather than the usual 1.5Xtuition. If you’re talking admission for Fall 2016, money could have run out–that’s something to consider–sometimes there’s a cap for how many WUE students are accepted at WUE schools. So get cooking if it’s this admission round.

Some universities just give a WUE discount, not a percentage, and it’s usually not in your favor. Just be sure to search WUE on the actual website of any university to see exactly what you’ll pay. Don’t trust the wiche website for the finer details, just use it as a starting point. Colleges usually discount only the tuition and at many colleges the fees are a big chunk and they don’t get discounted so when you’re thinking 1.5X, the reality can be higher…

@katliamom Thanks! :slight_smile:

U of Montana in Missoula and Colorado State in Ft.Collins are both in great college towns and I think both schools attract out of staters, and they are schools that people have heard of

@citymama9 Thank you!

@alooknac Thank you so much! So helpful

@anionforanion The immediate neighborhood around the university is a pretty typical student enclave. Lots of student apartments (those to the south of campus are not the best, but there are plenty of other options within walking distance), restaurants, etc. The area to the north of campus is quiet and residential and there is an elementary school very close to campus. There’s also a nice little shopping area just east of campus called “Nob Hill.” Just don’t expect it to be just like San Francisco! The campus is very compact and easy to get around. Nice landscaping and a mix of SW territorial and modern buildings.

Albuquerque is the largest city in New Mexico and like any other big city, it will have its share of issues. If you are concerned about the crime rate around campus, you could probably get statistics on UNM’s website or by googling. There is a text alert system if there are any incidents on or very close to campus. This usually amounts to 2-3 texts per year.

The sketchy neighborhoods that used to appear on the show “Cops” are nowhere near the university! :wink:

University of Wyoming is another to consider. Nice college town two hours from Denver, very pretty campus, great food in the dining hall (the best we had on any of our visits), very affordable with WUE. We were looking at engineering so you’ll have to research their humanities side.

I’ve also heard Wyoming can be generous with FA to OOS students…

So is Montana, BTW. Missoula is a beautiful college town; Bozeman a little less so, but it’s closer to good skiing (important for some people, lol) and its engineering, science and architecture (5-year master’s) are respected all throughout the west. Lots of OOS students in Montana: I was in Bozeman at the beginning of the school year and saw a car with a sign on it that said “Montana or Bust” – the car was from Rhode Island :slight_smile:

@mamaedefamilia Haha, thank you! :slight_smile:

@katliamom Very interesting haha :slight_smile: Thanks!

@Parentof2014grad Thank you!! It did look nice but the high acceptance rate threw me off.

Please be sure to do your own research. You do not make the cut for WUE at MSU Bozeman.

It looks like you would qualify for a $4500/yr scholarship but that’s not much help if you can’t get WUE.

@alooknac I don’t even want to be in Montana, but thank you for the reminder. I will do research for other schools.

(bad boys…bad boys…whatcha gonna do…)

I second @Integral69420 on U Idaho. An older engineering alum came to our high school with a great presentation. I like the area around Southern Oregon U- charming restaurants and lively theater in the Ashland area. I also sat through a presentation on Utah State. Students qualify for in state tuition after just 1 or 2 years there. OP, make sure to check graduation rates at all the WUE schools you are thinking about.

I see this thread is one year old.

No. Started this month.

I know of number of students that have gone to Western Washington, in Tacoma, I believe. Nice mid-sized campus, good location, happy students.
