I recently found this thread, and it’s great to know people who are in the same boat as I am – the waiting game. To introduce, I’m a graduating senior at Boston, hoping to get into any office, but my top choices were: Public Liaison, Legislative Affairs, and Political Affairs. A classmate of mine also applied for this summer session, so we’re just keeping our fingers crossed! :)

If any words of encouragement, I know that in the Bush era, phone calls were made to screen applicants, but not everyone who was accepted got one. Judging by this rushed process to get the summer session in, it may be up to the department’s discretion.

The White House accepts everyone of all ages, with little to a lot of experiences. I’ve heard of a undergrad freshman getting in to recent grads.

Also, a friend of mine who was a former intern in the Fall 2007 says to definitely try again if this summer falls through. She applied three times before landing the internship, and she recommends applying during the academic year since the summer session is very popular.

lox: what do you mean by screen applicants? Are these people that were on the edge of a yes/no decision and they made a call to get more information or what?

No news yet today, bummer. If I don’t find out by around 5 or so I’m definitely thinking it’ll be monday…

By the way, I think if we DON’T hear by Monday, we definitely didn’t get in - they will probably mail us the rejection by snail mail, which will take much longer to receive. I applied to last year’s program, and that’s how i got the rejection

I’m holding out til 630 for finding out today…the confirmation emails I got were from 530 and 600 (eastern time, I’m in New York), and I don’t think they’d send out stuff past then. If not it’ll be a long waiting game til Monday.

Obsessed, thanks for that tidbit- now I know what to expect if nothing comes by Monday :)

Hi Everyone!
I’m equally nervous about getting the White House internship, but hopefully Obama will be in office for the next 7 years<<meaning I have 7 more times to try!
I notice other people were writing about themselves,so I figured I’d say a little about me:
I applied for the Office of Public Liasion,Office of First Lady, and Office of Management.I’m only a freshman but I’ve had some work experience. I’m a former executive intern for one of Obama’s cabinet members and I also served under a youth board with him when I was in high school.I have a letter of rec from him as well, but I’m not sure how much that’ll really help. I’ve also interned at a non-profit…the same summer that I interned for President Obama as an intern at his Senate office(hmm, former Senate office).I’ve worked with one of the largest school systems in the country;planned large scale events(the largest had 30,000 students)I have had other random activities that are loosely centered around politics and education reform, and I mentioned that in my essays.I also included an additional essay on my 2nd choice office mainly because I really would like to work in either one of them. But like I said,I still have 7 years to make it to the WH as an intern…so if I have to wait, thats totally fine.
I guess. :)

:/ I’d rather not find out by snail mail. Although you bring up a good point, obsessed, because it says that “Applicants will be notified by April 20th of their acceptance into the White House internship program.” note: “acceptance”, not “decision”

poo.

tick tock tick tock

The sucky thing is this will be on my mind all weekend when I should be studying for finals -_-

agree. still alive today. Guessing they wont spend the weekend contacting us, in which case I will anxiously await news on Monday after my exam…
(bump)
I will probably avoid this site until Monday night (who am I kidding?? It’s worth a try…)

Hey I’m planning on applying for summer 2010. I was wondering what sort of previous experience you guys put on your applications… I’ve had a few internships but I don’t really know what this particular internship calls for aside from the obvious…

I’ve been reading this for a week now and decided it was time to join the conversation. I am finishing my junior year in college, have worked on the hill, on a senate campaign, and at CNN so I feel like I have some solid experience. Like many of you, I have been checking my email about 4 times an hour for the past week, especially yesterday and have heard nothing. I also did not get any call or email about a phone interview. My top choices were the communications office, political affairs and leg. affairs.

I was wondering if anyone has heard from the references they put down that THEY have gotten a call. It may be a good indicator of what your chances might be if your references have been checked out. I don’t know if mine have I am going to look into it…the thought just popped in my mind and I figured I’d throw it out there.

no, they’re definitely doing email acceptances tomorrow. during the Bush Era you got a snail mail no, dunno if they will do that this time too. Either way if you dont hear a yes or no by the end of the day tomorrow (around 7pm my guess?) it probably means no.
I’m a bit anxious too but I’ve kindof forced myself to forget about it due to my finals starting tomorrow. joy.

to answer danlsa: I’m really close to all 3 of my recs and I’m pretty sure they would have told me if they recieved any news, since they haven’t I will assume so and not look into it so much (especially with only around 24 hours to go).

I’ve been following this topic pretty closely. I was just contacted Friday for an internship with them. They interviewed me and told me that everyone would hear by Monday at 6 p.m. They then contacted my references.

At this point, if you haven’t been contacted or your references, at least according to my friend there, you have less than a good shot…

Thanks for that info Peebles. So everyone who is being considered seriously was given a call? Your source is someone at the White House? Also, which department were you contacted by? Thanks and good luck everyone.
