White-out on AP tests

<p>Hello everyone,</p>

<p>I have recently taken an AP US History Exam, and on the FRQs I used a "correction tape" (not the fluid white-out). Today, I found out that we are not supposed to use white-out on the essay to white out any mistakes. My teacher never told us that we weren't allowed to do so, and on the day of the exam, no one checked what was in our pencil case. Furthermore, I asked the proctor if I could use white-out when I was writing the essays, and he said yes (I have my friend who was taking the exam as well as a witness). </p>

<p>What will happen to my results? Will it get canceled? Will it be marked as a 0? Will I get marked as a cheater? Or will it be all right?? </p>

<p>Has anyone else been in a similar situation? </p>

<p>According to the Coordinator's Manual, your coordinator indeed should have stopped you, as you noted.</p>

<p>The closest thing I can find on the list of irregularities is for "Pencil or inappropriate ink color on free-response section." The instruction is "Advise the student that scoring of the free-response section will not be affected." It also says that no irregularity report needs to be filed for this action to take place, so I'm guessing you should be OK.</p>

<p>But you should keep in mind that this is just my interpretation from reading through the Coordinator's Manual. There should be a number in your student pack, where you can call the College Board and ask them to be absolutely certain.</p>

<p>shoot, i used fluid white out to white out some quotation marks =S cant just cross it out cuz it looks a lot more obvious that way. would anything happen? or would it be too small a thing to be realized?</p>

<p>Frankly, I would think you'd be safer with the white out than the correction tape, because the correction tape can be written on.</p>

Follow the instructions.</p>

<p>You could cross out the entire word proceeding it as well as the period.</p>

<p>A short, diagonal line, from lower left, to upper right, crosses out any punctuation mark. (except, of course, a short diagonal line :)</p>

<p>Etiquette is best described as making the other person feel comfortable.
Who do you want more comfortable that a reader grading your essay?</p>

<p>You shouldn't have a problem with grading just because you used correction tape.</p>

<p>It doesn't matter how you cross out your words as long as it's clear that you don't want the reader to know you're writing that.</p>
