Who got accepted to Harvard SSP 2012?

Hey guys! so who is going to the Harvard SSP this year? What classes are you taking? Do you think going to this couse helps in admission to top colleges (not only harvard)?

I’m going! I’m taking Intro to Comparative Politics and a post-Cold War global history course. How about you?

I was there last year, during which time I took 2 economics classes. Overall, the experience was satisfactory but not indescribably amazing.

To answer your question, no, I don’t think colleges are that impressed with the program. In general, programs like these that cost a lot of money are seen as something that gives an unfair benefit to those who have the ability to pay; because of this inherent unfairness created by expensive programs, they are not weighed heavily. Furthermore, this question was frequently brought up by SSPers during the program, to which an Adcom was quick to respond, “No, this does not guarantee admittance to Harvard.” It is my understanding that aside from the apparent purpose and facade, Harvard runs this as a cash-cow.

Congrats! I’m also going. I think I’m going to take psychology intro. Did you apply for the financial aid?

Congrats to you all accepted! Im not sure still which courses Im taking. SInce I am international I did not apply for financial aid, so I hope the experience is worth the money.

I’m considering going.
It just annoys me that they limit you to 8 credits. So if I were to go and take a science that I like I couldn’t take a second course.
It also depends on the amount of financial aid, cause 10,000 is more than I can afford.

Who got accepted?

Everyone that applied. duuuuh.

I got in as well! Congrats everyone!

Just if anyone wanted to know, I called the admissions office to see just how many students applied and how many got accepted so far this year. The response was that out

I got in as well! Congrats everyone!

Just if anyone wanted to know, I called the admissions office to see just how many students applied and how many got accepted so far this year. The response was that out of 57,000 applicants, 3,000 got accepted…
That was a much slimmer margin that I had anticipated. Of course, I’m glad to have gotten in, but I didn’t realize how competitive admissions into the summer program was.

@darmkatter1over0 It is IMPOSSIBLE to have that many applicants, Harvard College recieves about 35,000 each year. Are you making that up or are you nuts?

@eduard97 No, that was the information I actually got when I called in. Perhaps I was misinformed though. The person who answered the phone call told me that the summer program actually gets that many applications, and accepts that many students.
If someone else would like to try calling the admissions office and asking them to confirm the statistics, I think many of us would be interested in knowing whether this was a fluke response or if the numbers are actually true.
Sorry if I scared anyone, I just thought people might be as curious as I was about the admissions rate for SSP. I had heard a lot things about a 60% acceptance rate to the summer program, as well as smaller applicant pools (such as the 35,000 or something to that effect)… I wonder just how true it is. :/

now you’ve got me curious!! Everyone I told was soo elated, yet I didnt really think that much of it since 60% got in. If only 3000 out of 57000 got in then thats a 5.3% acceptance rate. That figure sounds more like the rate for regular admissions as a freshman. Someone pleasse call in to confirm this.

yeah thats what i thought, i read somewhere that around 2,000 apply and they accept around 1,000. so perhaps a 50% acceptance rate is for the ssp summer school.

Congrats guys~going too~I m an international as well~also curious about the admitted rate~anyone in the States wanna call to ask them?

I’m planning on going this summer since none of my prospective internships panned out. Neurobiology and Intro to Biomedical Ethics!

@GrammerNazi
haha, well, I’ll see you in bioethics! i’m taking that class too! it sounds really interesting…

It appears you heard 57,000 when the real figure was 5,700. 3,000/5,700 is a lot more reasonable.

see you guys there! harvard sent me a message saying that I was out of the program due to housing unavailability. fortunately, i was reacepted and given a chance to send all my papers. If anyone has gone to Harvard SSP, is the money worth it? how is the experience and the social life for a rising senior?

Hey guys, im going as well. Doing the 8 cred chem course. Are any of y’all in the facebook group???

Hey guys!! I got accepted into the Harvard SSP Program and I am so excited:)
My classes are on Tuesdays and Thursdays so I’ll be having a long day! haha I’m excited to meet everyone there and make some new friends. I think this is going to be an experience that we will not forget.
Has anyone been assigned a dorm building yet?
What different countries will be attending?

See you there!!
