I wouldn't say that that alone makes you spoiled. I mean, that is pretty much par for the course at my school...

My parents, though they could easily afford it, NEVER give me any money for vacations, fun, parties, recreational shopping, etc.

And my dad betches about my spending despite only giving me a grand total of $750 a semester (includes costs for books)

welcome to my life....

I think parents should give their kids 'fun money' if they can afford it. Assumming the kid is a good student and not wasteful.

Dude, I spent $750 on books alone this semester. How are you supposed to live on that for 4 months, short of getting a job?

My argument: I'm a college student. COLLEGE is my job.

Well, i know personally, that my parents will probably do that sort of thing because they believe that college is the time for students to become independent, and solve their own problems (financially or otherwise)...

That isn't to say that they won't help me at all...

get a job.

^That is what I'll be doing...

depends on your parents. it's pretty normal for my parents.

I usually pay for my trips out to California either over winter or spring break to see my grandparents because my parents won't pay a dime. Their answer? "We'd rather have you home with us." The only way I could go was to work and pay for the tickets myself!

And to pay all the money to get drunk on the beach for a week when I won't even be recovered when I get back? I think not. College is intense enough for me that I need to decompress completely over breaks, especially short ones.

So therefore, I usually go on one trip either over winter or spring break because it's on my own expense.

Now that I know my spring break plans.....I can say that I'm paying for the trip.

Going to Chicago with a roommate and maybe one other person for St Patty's Day. We're staying in a hotel that's about $50/night, for 4 nights, and it's about 350 miles away--we're staying in the suburbs to keep things a little cheaper. Hopefully, 3 or 4 of us will go to reduce individual cost even more. Planning to live fairly cheap by taking the train into the city, eating at some good but fairly priced restaurants, doing FREE sightseeing, and some window shopping. The glory of window shopping--it's free :)

My parents would never pay for spring break, even if they could afford it. If I go anywhere, I'm going.

And I'm probably not going to get any money for spending money/whatever while at college, so getting a job is going to be my only option. Two jobs this summer! Bleh.

Also planning on going abroad for a semester/year, but all the colleges I look at will continue to give me finaid while abroad, so it shouldn't be too much more. Hurrah!

I should also note that I'm paying for my spring break because I work two jobs and have the money to do so. My parents considered paying for break, but if I didn't have at least one job they wouldn't have even considered the idea.

It's my hard-earned money that I'm spending, and I'm making the trip as cheap as possible.

I am waiting for the day when my KIDS pay for my spring break ROFL :D

If the parents can afford to send their kids off for spring break after a hard semester at school, then why not?

Just because some people grew up in a privelaged family with a priveleged lifestyle does not make them spoiled. A relatively low income family could spoil their kids just as well as a wealthy family can.

Complete and utter bull****. How, exactly, is a family of three or four, or five, with an income straddling the poverty line going to send their kid somewhere luxurious for Spring break? Or give him/her money for clothes and food and other crap at school? Or send them to a nice private college that doesn't meet full-need. Or anything like that?

Lol, seriously. My mom lives off disability and retirement and I'm at school because I have scholarships and pell grant and I work. How exactly is she going to spoil me with a $3000 trip to Cozumel or whatever, when she has to live with my grandmother to have a place to live at all? I pay for all my own bills whether from my job or from my refund from financial aid. I'm going to France this summer on study abroad, and it's $5000. Do you think my mom is paying for it? Hell no. I took out a private loan, by myself, to pay for it (though hopefully at least some of that will get paid back with financial aid from my school). My mom bought me a new suit of luggage and a camera for Christmas/the trip, and that's about it.

How does anyone manage to spend that much money on a vacation anyway? We're single kids. Airfare is cheap. Thousands of dollars?

I'm going to Florida and staying with a friend. Grand total will be a few hundred dollars. I'm paying.
