My friends and I were talking about our spring break plans. I asked them how they were going to pay for their expensive trips since I know they don't make much. They said their parents pay for their trips.

Is this unusual? I am not saying it's bad. I think it's great if the parents have the means to do it.

I think it's sort of ridiculous that parents pay for everything like that. I'm not saying that they shouldn't pay for tuition and things like that if they have the money, but to pay for EVERYTHING, like rent, and food, and spending money, and effing spring break?! That's just setting your child up for failure later, because they'll always think "well, my parents always pay for everything, so I don't ACTUALLY have to do anything ever."

^Well, I can see them paying for tuition, books, rent and FOOD, above all. However, kids should be able to pay their own way for non necessities (and some wild spring break bash is certainly not one).

some lucky friends you got there. my parents have never been willing to pay for anything. i told them i might want to go to grad school. first response? "go ahead if you can pay for it".

Actually my parents WANT to pay it for me, but I don't want them to. Come on, it's college. We're adults now. Besides, I'd feel like I'm being indebted, since I've learned that you can never be completely independent until you're free from financial dependency.

I don't think it's normal, but then again I've NEVER gone anywhere for vacation on spring, fall, or winter break. I'm actually staying at school for spring break (only go home in winter and summer).

And $1500 to $2000 for one person for a week? Spoiled...

my parents wont allow me to go on spring break freshman year BUT..

ill have to pay for everything when i do go away next year. theres no reason they should pay for me to go get wasted for 7 days straight on a beach. they pay over $50,000 a year for me to come to school, i think its reasonable for them not to pay for my vaca.

however, by mom did say that if i wanted to go on a service trip this spring break she would pay. its only about $500 because we fundraise the rest and she knows that i dont have any money left from my summer job. too bad i passed the deadline to sign up :(

From a parent - definitely would NOT pay for an expensive spring fling trip - but happily paid for one a couple for my gal - she went thru the schools recreation/adventure program - and for the $100 that it cost me a couple of times (a heck of alot cheaper then even trying to get her home :)) - she had a blast kayaking the everglades (and all the other stuff that they did) - or camping/scuba diving on a florida beach - or the week spent in NOLA - was there during Madi Gras also :) - working with an organization there.

But to pay for a drunkin beach week?!? uuummmmm - in a word - NO.

yeah most of the people who i knew from high school that went to private colleges, like USC, all went to cabo and stuff for spring break. And they were able to go on a semester abroad too, and you can also add that they have nice cars too. So i would say they're spoiled.

I'm going to visit my boyfriend in California for spring break and my parents are very kindly paying for the plane tickets (~$350 altogether). The spending money I'll use is my own though... So I'm moderately spoiled.
