Who reads your application?

Do the admission officers assigned to your region read your application and make a decision on it, or is there a different process?

in an info session, we were told the regional admission officer’ll read your application first. don’t know if he screens or passes all applications to another reader.

any way, i think the regional offer has more to say on your application because he/she knows your area and your school very well. so, his/her comment may become a key factor.

The one guaranteed reader is the admissions officer for your region. Competitive candidates have their applications go before a committee of admissions officers for a vote.

So how many of the early applicants get to the vote round?

Only the admissions office knows, but my uninformed guess is that 60-80% of apps go to the committee. Many, many applicants are in the range.

Do any apps of very strong candidates not go to committee, and are accepted based on the 1st reading by the regional adm officer itself, or does every (eventually) accepted app go to committee prior to acceptance?

I heard faculty is pulled in sometimes too?

No, faculty has no pull in the admissions office.

My understanding is that regional admissions officers read applications from their regions, and pick out the “worthy” ones and bring them to the committee. Then, the committee, composed of all admissions officers, meets to discuss each of the “top” applicants from each region, and together, they vote on whom to admit. Though I have no evidence, I believe that the committee begins meeting now (i.e. the end of November).

Faculty may comment on music and art supplements and scientific research if requested by admissions officers.

My region rep said the panel/committee that reviews the “worthy” applicants is composed of like one adcom, one prof, and some other ppl. Maybe the Dean or someone else. They rank you on a scale of 1-4/5 then if you’re over or under a certain score, then you’re in. (I kind of forget the exact process though)

yea i think your region rep weeds out the weak apps and then the strong ones go to a pannel where they are weeded out some more

^ ok mr. “i can’t speeel panel” =D

That sounds very reasonable and a good surmising of it - thanks rockermcr!
