Who successfully transferred into Berkeley's HAAS?

Hello!

I currently attend a CC, third quarter in my first year, and I am trying to see if whether I should try transfer into UCB HAAS school or just try applying under economic major, since they don't allow alternative choices on their application..My interest is sales/marketing and related field

I have a 4.0 GPA
Unfortunately I don't have that many EC's because I live on my own so I work about 25 to 30 hours a week in order to support myself. Is there anyway I can incorporate that into my transfer apps to explain why I don't have that many ECs?

And I understand that I won't be able to transfer as a junior to HAAS, so does that mean I would only be a sophomore? Or how does it work, does anyone know?

Thanks!

I am not an expert on this but I do know two people to successfully transfer. One a 4.0 and one had a 3.92 or there about.

They both had pretty good EC’s and work experience. The main thing to understand is they do their best to choose someone who is diverse and focused. Meaning the GPA is not everything. Work, Life, Experience all play a significant focus.

Your essays should be anything but generic. You have two essays for the UC application and you will have one supplemental essay when applying to Haas. Use those essays as an opportunity to highlight your personality and why you stand above and beyond your competition. It is what they all say, i know, but really, start thinking about these essays soon and really work on giving yourself an edge through these. Also it is not too late to add EC’s into your life - tutoring, volunteer, clubs and activities, etc. Try to choose activities that are non-standard (i.e. student government is good, but also join a group that has a cause that reflects your personal beliefs - ranging from political to social).

Make SURE you complete all prerequisites!! I cannot stress this enough. Go to assist.org and make sure they are all done, anything missing automatically disqualifies you. I suggest completing all 9 breadth requirements, they say it doesn’t give you and edge, but better to be safe than sorry. Also keep your GPA up. I am not sure how low of a GPA they consider, but of the people I personally know and from what I’ve heard they expect high GPA’s.

You will be a junior when you transfer. They don’t accept someone who is already a junior (i.e. from within Berkeley or another 4 year- so you get one chance and one chance only at Haas)

Hope this information helps. Remember just use this next year to open your opportunities to new and exciting challenges. But if your heart is set on Berkeley, rather than Haas specifically, look into other majors. Econ is less impacted at UCB then UCLA so your chances are good.

Me personally, I applied as an Econ major to UC’s except Bus Ad at Haas. My chances are not especially good, but we will all find out in a little less than 2 weeks. And we can all give you a little better heads up.

Just FYI, Haas does not look at the UC essays so don’t try to tie everything together and make it a package.

And yes, I asked this question while I was physically there talking to an undergrad adviser in S450. I also called to ask this again and got the same answer from another adviser.

good tip, i didn’t know that. i guess just focus on the supplemental one then, all.

Hopefully, I will be. In two weeks, we shall see. For me, what I did was:

 • Maintaining my 4.0 GPA
 • Heavy courseload (86 semester units total since Fall 2007)
 • Finishing all the pre-reqs (Very important, especially the TWO English and ONE Literature pre-reqs. A lot of people missed these)
 • Getting involved heavily in your college (Research conferences, honors program, leadership positions, etc)
 • Getting an internship or a job (Business related if you can)
 • Start writing your UC and supplemental essays early (Proofread them heavily)
 • Hope for the best

hm what was the prompt for the supplemental essay ?

this year the choices were

A. Describe an experience you had in a culture different from your own. How would this experience prepare you for a diverse world?

B. If you could change one thing you’ve done in your life, what would it be and how would you do it differently?

I honestly respect all you guys aiming so high.

Do work son

@Cr3sc3nt: did you already get into Haas?

no wayyyy, I invested a lot of time and work in my UC essays :(… bad news!!! There’s seriously no way you can tell Haas all about yourself with just 500 words in the supplemental essay!!! [sigh…]

Nope, not yet. In nine days, maybe.
