Who to Ask for a Rec?

Hi Everyone!

I have already chosen a science teacher to do my first letter of recommendation, but I'm having trouble picking the humanities teacher. Input, please?

Option 1: 11th grade AP English Language teacher. I didn't participate -that- much in that class, so I'm not sure how well he knows me, but he's definitely a good writer - he graduated from an Ivy and he's published a book before. I asked him at the end of last year if he would write a rec and he said he would. I think the rec would be good, but I'm not sure if it would be excellent at showing off my personality.

Option 2: 12th grade English teacher (not AP), freshman year English teacher, homeroom teacher. I'm pretty sure that this teacher likes me - I participated a lot in freshman year (although I admit I was pretty immature lol) and this year he's been calling on me a lot, probably because I'm one of the few people in the class that he knows. He's really quirky though and I'm not sure if he's as good of a rec writer as Option 1.
Also, I'm applying Early Decision so I would need to ask ASAP even though I've only been in his class this year for a week.. Would that be weird?

Someone help me decide!

Well, you kind of sound like me in a way. I would go for the quirky 12th grade English teacher if you think that his essay is going to reflect your personality in the letter. But, idk option 1 sounds good too. You have a problem I wish I had.

Past recc. record of the teacher - i.e. where the students they recommended
got in will tell you who to go with.

11th grade teacher would be my choice.
You can give him summarized backgroud info in a sheet for him to get
to know your achievements.

I have seen quirky/moody people negatively impact the chances for at
least two students last year.

Oh really, MIT maybe I should rethink my letters of reccomendation.

i also think that i -shined- more in option #2's class ... probably because it isn't an AP class. should i still go with #1?

Even though it wouldn't be as well written, I think I would go with the second teacher because they know you better and can write a rec that captures your personality better than option one.

thanks for your input.
how much do colleges take the writing style of the rec-writer into account?

Regarding Post #8:
The recc. providers command of the language can have a significant impact
(exception being for a few applicants who get supplemental reccs from
non-english speaking teachers or from otehr countries) on your
admittance to a top school.

English teachers tend to be the best communicators (usually).
