I attended the May 31-June 1 BB session, where I registered for FR 101. I only took 1 year of French in high school (senior year), so I didn’t think I would be prepared for the placement exam. But I’ve been also been self-teaching and using the (off-brand, ha) Rosetta Stone software. After talking to others though, it seems that it wouldn’t be that hard for me to test into at least 103. I plan on minoring in French, and it would make my life (or my plan to double major + French minor) so much easier if I could jump into 103.

Sooo, I guess my questions are:
Is it possible for me to auto-jump into 103? Would anyone with experience in the French department like to recommend or discourage starting at at least 103?
If not, who should I contact about taking the French placement exam (since I’ve already been to BB)? I’m pretty sure it has to be taken onsite, and I only live 2 hours away so it’s not much trouble for me to drive to campus. I’m actually going to France (!) soon, so I probably won’t have time to take it until after July 16th.
Does anyone have a list or know the rest of the upcoming Bama Bound sessions? So I can check the available spots in the French classes?

I don’t know if you can test into FR 103 without that second year of high school French…but maybe there is a signature that you can get after you take the placement exam.

French 103 is open to students who have two or more high school units of French (but who do not test into the 2nd year level), students with transfer credit equivalent to FR 101 at the University of Alabama, as well as to those with departmental approval.

I’d love to know if anyone has had any success contacting someone about French…my friend called every number she could find and everyone told her to email Edmunds, who never responded to her email (nor mine).

Minor in Russian is available, DS added Russian as a double major (w/econ) through the New College program - NEW allows you to essentially design your own major, DS was very impressed with Dr Hall “he’s so cool”

Unfortunately…many of the FL profs are hard to reach in the summer because of travels…some lead groups of study abroad…or they are doing their own foreign travels for professional enhancement.

We had the same problem when we were trying to contact a Spanish prof over the summer. He was leading a group of students in Spain.

On the French topic… at my CBH interview, someone I met told me with my background in French (5 years in middle/high school, 2 on the AP) 103 would be really, really easy and I should go straight to 201. Apparently 103 is completely basic.

On the Russian… I had a meeting with the head of the department, I guess, who told me that my plan to minor in Russian might not work out because the “Russian department” is actually one professor. So it’s all contingent upon what he happens to be teaching in a given semester. This semester, for instance, there was no Russian 101 offered when I registered for classes. Keep that in mind if y’all are interested in Russian.

^^^
Correct, Russian language is one prof, but other courses for the major/minor can be in other departments Lit, Hist, Polysci etc., DS is starting RUS in 201 this fall.

Right, electives would be fine, it’s just a bit… difficult to get started in the language, haha. I had no idea until Dr. Picone (French professor and the chair of… something…) told me. For me, I’ll probably jump into 101 if/when it’s offered, but I can’t really plan on taking it at this point.

m2ck, Yes, I’m in CBH. When I interviewed I was doing French/Philosophy, now I’m in American Studies.

Basically losing the department is a shame, because Russian is considered a critical language by the government/people who give critical language study abroad scholarships. Oh, and it’s just really cool.

Congrats on making CBH! My son loved being in CBH. :)

I wonder what the future is for Russian at Bama…will they keep it just as a minor. Doesn’t look like they can justify hiring a second prof. I guess much will depend on enrollment.

Looking at last Fall’s enrollment for Russian…

101 …21 kids out of 25 seats
201…12 kids out of 15 seats
361…11 kids out of 10 seats (one over capacity)

That last course is a CBA International Course Req
