the tension is mounting, who's gonna be number one!

and what are going to be the top 10 universities?

Well, I'm eager for it to come out. But not because I care whether Princeton outranks Harvard or vice versa.

I simply want access to all the data and stats on the USNWR website. I discovered there's a "premium" subscription last month. But didn't buy-in; decided to wait for the new info, instead.

Little or no interest.

why? when's it coming out?

should be coming out in three weeks.

"Little or no interest."

And yet you decided to come into this thread...

I'm looking forward to the new rankings to see who's managed to game the system to gain a few spots. I'm more interested, however, in the new National Research Council rankings of faculty quality due out in the fall.

So um...when's it coming out?

Taggart: Please....read. dconcerned said about 3 weeks.

I don't pay it much mind except for the fact that Michigan has been close to 25 recently. There's always a risk it will end up out of the Top 25, which would probably inspire much teeth-gnashing and woe among alumni and some students. The difference between #25 and #26 is quite a bit different in the mind of the public than the difference between, say, #16 and #17. And "dropping" a spot is viewed with alarm, even though it's rare that an institution would materially change in quality, reputation, or resources in any 12-month period.

Would the upcoming issue be the one to show any dramatic change in Virginia Tech's ranking in the wake of last year's shootings?

Last year VT was #71 nationally.

IIRC, there was a spike in apps following the tragedy. Would that make the school appear more selective?

I like looking at the rankings, though I know they have little validity. I, as well, am looking forward to the NRC rankings.

I'm excited to read them, but obviously I take them with a grain of salt.

Same goes for me... and I still came on here too. You don't have to be curious about the topic to look at a thread. You only need to be interested in seeing how many people are sucking at the teet of rankings. Too many people are... I like that most here said they'll read them but not take them too seriously.

@MrPrez

Your condescension is ... premature? I asked in hopes of getting a specific date.

Which is...August 22nd? That's the only date I saw on the google search.

Take it from an old timer, one or two "high profile" universities will make a serious jump (5 or more spots) but by-and-large, schools with stay within 2-3 spots of last year's rankings.

Alexandre is the King when it comes to old timers.

It'd be interesting to see whether Michigan will continue to be listed among the top 25 universities..

ProuWolverine, Michigan is due for a drop out of the top 25. The University has done nothing to improve its status in the USNWR formula. I could see Michigan ranked anywhere between 22 and 28 this year. Anything above or below would surprise me.

I expect Tulane to jump immensely. Any one else agree? Their selectivity should skyrocket due to the whole no essay + no fee + a bajillion applicants.

Thoughts?

(i'm sure they dropped after katrina, so it's not like they're really getting back above where they were)
