Who's going to pay $8 for Early Viewing?

Me me me! :)

I am. the not knowing what score i sent to YALE is killing me.

Me too. I'm guessing almost everyone on this site will.

A better question may be: Who isn't?

Why doesn't ACT just be honest and increase the registration fee by $8?

Most, if not all businesses nowadays figure everyone saves money by doing business online. Not ACT: It must cost them extra $$$$$ to "add scores to computer files", looks like it's cheaper for them to mail the scores to you.

im not.

i dont think its worth it. maybe cuz it doesnt really matter to me what i get on it. im happy with my SAT score and im not planning on sending my ACT score anywhere.

i did all 3 times. definitely took the pressure off. but it was always so nerve wracking when you pressed that final button, the page was loading up, and the score just APPEARED

They mail the scores to you regardless of whether you check them online.

I bet ACT does save money by doing business online: e.g., through online registration. However, I doubt that any business saves money by providing free services online that don't replace any other services. Developing and maintaining web applications costs money.

Mrs. Ferguson:

Please don't interpret my gripe about the $8 charge as ACT "bashing". We can agree to disagree.

Making scores available after a reasonable time period when students have paid already $29 and up for the test should not cost extra. My Dad says it shouldn't cost extra for developing the web application, whether 100,000 students view their scores online, or 200,000 do. He said it can cost extra for the servers to make scores available, but that would be a fraction of a penny, definitely not $8. I find the $8 charge unreasonable, an anomaly in the age of the Internet, and a devious scheme to squeeze $8 out of the vast majority of students who naturally want to see their scores about 2 weeks after the test.

That said, I do appreciate your advice and informative posts about the ACT.

I realize how stupid it is to pay $8 to view a score online, when it obviously did not cost them $8 per score to upload them into the database. Actually, I bet that the scores are automatically added to the database when the tests are scanned. But I just can't wait any longer to see my score, so yes, I will pay the $8 early viewing fee.

I'll be paying the 8 dollars also, but it still seems like the ACT could provide free online viewing. with writing the test is already over $40, so adding the score viewing makes it quite expensive.

Once we see the MC scores online can we report those on the applications or do we have to wait for the letter? I took the writing test. The school I am sending the scores too does not ask for the writing score so is it ok to just give the MC score?

you should be able to list the scores once you see them. the schools will probably want the official report anyway, so it isn't as important on the application.

mumbo,
Sorry, I wasn't trying to chide you for "bashing" anyone, just offer a perspective that you might not have thought of.

It's true that the number of students who use the online scores service probably does not affect the cost much (except for staffing the telephone support lines, which increases directly with the number of users); nonetheless, developing a web application like that--simple as it may seem--can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Then there's the cost of regular maintenance. An application like that can take many years to pay for itself. That money has to come from somewhere, and if you didn't pay to use the service directly, the cost would have to be added to the base price of testing, which might not be fair to those who didn't use the service.

I think when they say "adding scores to our computer files", that might have something to do with matching your answer sheet data to your registration data.

They still make tons of money from it, don't deny that.

wat time are they gonna post up the scores?

ME! definately waking up at 6 am eastern to get them

Might not be up at 6 eastern - they aren't "supposed" to be posted until 6 central, but last time I got them by 6:30 eastern.

Probably not, we should get them in later this week anyways.
