Hello everyone. I need some advice on whether or not I should risk changing my essay without time to have it edited. There isn't too much I can do about this problem because there are only nine hours before the deadline, but any insight would help. Here's my problem:
Yesterday morning I met with a transfer counselor who specializes in helping students in the social sciences (i'm a cultural anthro major). She said, and I quote, "This is a really good essay. I'm not just saying that. I read these all the time. You can really tell you're passionate about culture". So later, just to tidy up my essay, I met with an English teacher. She had a different opinion. Her exact words were "It's just flat, I think it needs to come to life more. These admissions people read thousands of these things and you need yours to stick out." Who should I trust?

Anyone? I know it's a long post, but I REALLY need help from my knowledgeable fellow transfer students.......

I would trust the transfer counselor more, maybe if you have any time to make some changes you could but do you really have any other choice than to just use that one?

The way i see it a transfer counsler is only there to give advice, where as an english professor is a at least a master grad who obviously know what he/she is talking about. Give the amout of time remaining i would change it.

Thanks guys. I've taken the advice of the english teacher. It's now more colorful, but the language doesn't sound like my natural conversation style. The ideas describe me perfectly, though, it just sounds more sophisticated than I actually am, lol. I hope it doesn't sound stiff......

I disagree. I would trust the transfer counselor more. And I think this just underscores how much disagreement there can be on these essays. I say to look at the criteria the respective school gives you.

Trust the transfer counselor. Schools just want to find out something about you in the essays - they don't need to be ultra creative; in fact, I think the simple, concise ones might be more effective.

an english teacher is biased. but if the counselor always reads transfer essays, then i would go with her.

I did very well with some very colorful yet honest essays, of my own devising. I think taking the english teacher's advise is fine.
