Who's waiting for RD and who got merit?

There must be many Furman people out there waiting. Who got in and with merit aid. What do you guys think of Furman that have been there? Class size, professor availability, dorms etc etc.

I got accepted RD and got invited to interview for the Lay and Duke scholarships.

That is terrific for you. Impress them......... When did you get your letter?

I got my letter last Friday. Did you apply to Furman?

Sure I applied. Waiting like all the others. Haven't heard any impressions of Furman yet by people.

Here is a good report on Furman from the parents forum

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=151825

Thanks Lukester. I had been looking for something like this about Furman as well. Any other perspectives on Furman that are "hidden" on other CC areas would be greatly appreciated.

Ok Lukester, this was awesome to give some impression. I agree, others share or link us to any more really insightful stuff. What about dorms? I also hear that they have shuttle services for the students that take you into the city etc. I have communicated with a student amabassador there and she said she is able to get around without a car and has friends and also this school service. She by the way is a minority and didn't seem to be challenged by that. What about this "engaged learning"? Do you actually get some hands on work towards your major- like practical application to classroom learning?.

What about Furman's reputation with employers/graduate schools (mainly employers though, since I'm probably going to major in Business)?

More of Furman University’s graduates have gone to earn Ph.D. degrees in recent years than any other private liberal arts college in the South, according to a survey conducted by the University of Chicago National Opinion Research Center.

Furman had 308 graduates receive terminal degrees in their field from 1996 to 2003, which was the top figure among Southern liberal arts colleges. The university ranked 18th overall among the nation’s liberal arts colleges.

“The fact that a remarkably large number of our graduates go on to earn Ph.D. degrees is an indication of the extent to which a Furman education stokes the intellectual fires of our students,” said Dr. Thomas Kazee, vice president for academic affairs and dean. “This suggests that we not only attract students with a high level of intellectual curiosity, but that our faculty have created a community in which that curiosity is nurtured and extended.”

Yeah, I saw that too. I'm more worried about employers because most business grads go straight into the workplace, and even if they do get their MBA, that's after they have some work experience under their belts.

Any recent alumni's out there have any insight for wdlan88?

Hi -- I'm a parent, was the OP for the Furman trip report posted above. For more "hidden" reviews and comments, you might want to do an advanced search for posts containing the word "Furman" that are posted by Faline2. Faline2 is a parent, Furman alum, and has posted some outstanding comments on Furman. Her posts have been very helpful to my son as he looks into Furman.

Thanks lderochi. That's interesting that someone from Delaware is looking into Furman. I lived there for most of my childhood and still have a lot of family up there.

We have extensive family in the Carolinas. I went to grad school at Duke and my wife is a Tar Heel (it was a bad evening for me), plus various aunts/uncles/grandparents. So he's looking mainly in VA/NC/SC. I'd like him to look at UD for instate tuition, but no chance.

Thanks lots Iderochi, I have indeed searched and found the posts that you referred to. Gave me more insight. Except for the supposed bible atmosphere which isn't a problem for me it really seem like a terrific school all around from the professors and the students and the campus etc. I did worry a little about the posting somewhere about it's remoteness to the city and needing a car. I won't have a car. I see they have some shuttle service for the students I think.

So the admissions checker says that RD decisions will be available as of March 16th. I don't know if that includes any financial aid info though. My college counselor loves Furman but says they keep their responses very tight lipped until "the time". I want to do communications I think and I wonder how accessible it is to give input to the newspapers etc early on. Anybody else got any recent feedback or decisions etc. I wonder if this has people from all over the place as apposed to only lots of South Carolineans. The engaged learning seems to imply that you can put your classroom learning to work and get some experience early on. Any input on that. I wonder about recruiting later on and that implies you have already started to do something other than sit in a class.

Scholarship/financial aid packages are sent out on April 7th according to Furman's website. I saw somewhere that only 30% of the student body is from SC.

Good info to know......

E-mail tonight says decisions are tomorrow 3/16 beginning at 8:30 AM ET
