Waitlisted at Furman - now what?

My son is wait listed… he is OOS, 34 ACT, straight As with 11 APs and a few Honors courses, #5 of 418 students, lots of extras too. He is our oldest child, and I think we got a little full of ourselves that he would get in with no problem. :frowning:

Does anyone have experience with the wait list situation?

@Emmaboo, I am sorry for the disappointment. Did he visit the school? I get the sense it was not his first choice or was it?

Yes, we visited the school and he loved it. It ranks #2 on his list of choices, with VA Tech #1 and Miami Ohio a close #3. I’m just not sure how likely it is he will get un-waitlisted and if he does, will he still have merit scholarship opportunities at that point? Just curious about others’ experiences. Thanks!

You should get in touch with the admissions department and ask all those questions. I wonder if his application was overlooked. He is a great student and a perfect fit for Furman. I wish your son the best.

I would have your student place a phone call to admissions. Have your son state his interest level. Seems odd he was waitlisted, just looking at what you’ve shared.

Best wishes, Furman is a great school and it seems your son would add much to the campus.

You should check how many kids were admitted off of the wait list the last 5 years to see if there are any trends. It is unlikely that you will get any merit.

With your son’s incredible credentials, I have a strong suspicion that Furman thought that he may have applied as a “safety”? Furman is really hot right now ( at least from where we live OOST-several waitlisted here too!). I agree with previous posters that he needs to call admissions. Please let us know how it turns out.

Did he get into VA Tech? If that’s his #1 I see no problem. Someone above told you to contact Furman. I hope you know to have your son do the inquiry; not you. I think if you look at the Common Data Set for Furman you can determine how many students were admitted from the waiting list in years past. My oldest son goes to Tech and a close friend goes to Furman. Many people in our area (VA) confuse it with Ferrum which I would not like. Yes I know the difference. Good luck.

OspreyCV22 - yes he got into VT. However, he received only $5k in merit aid, and we are not prepared to foot the bill for the remaining $38k+. We, naively, hoped for more merit aid. We may have the same problem at Furman if he is called off the wait list. Furman is more expensive than VT to begin with, but after researching both schools, Furman is known for giving larger amounts of merit aid so we thought it was a possibility. I guess you never really know until you get the acceptance and the award letters. I looked at the Common Data Set for Furman and that was helpful. I’ve never heard of Ferrum, so no confusion here. Thanks!
