Why 101 courses closed but 0 enrolled?

Under Fall 2012, why are some 101 (1010, 1050, etc.) courses "closed" but have 0 enrollment. Does this mean that this class is not available in the fall or does this mean that the class will not begin to enroll until a certain date (such as orientation).

Without specific classes, I can’t say for sure, but if the class is exclusively for first year students, then the class is closed until orientations start in July. They way that works is a certain number of seats are opened for each orientation session.

Search the UVa threads for more info, as there have been a number of discussions on this over the past few years. Just know, though, that if you are in CLAS, you will be be best served to come to orientation with a long list of classes you are interested in taking. You will do well to get one or two of your first choices, so you need a lot of back-ups. The earlier your registration appointment during your orientation session, the more choices you will have.
