Why am I not getting a full ride?

I know numerous transfers who have gotten a full ride to UCLA and other UCs. They have a lower GPA and a higher family income compared to me. It does not make sense. I live with an unemployed mother and although I work part time, I hoped that with straight A’s and EC’s I would get everything covered just like others, instead of being asked to take over a 10K loan.

Does anyone have any knowledge about situations like this?

Do you qualify for Blue and Gold? Does your family have a huge amount of savings/retirement funds?

Generally it is not a ‘full ride’, but it does cover tuition.

Did you get your FAFSA in before March 2? Which School?

Reasonable loans are always part of UC packages. I have only once seen it not so and that was for a 10k Regents award for a freshman. Can you copy your award?

@luckie1367 I do quality for Blue and Gold, we do not have any savings, and I submitted my FAFSA I think around January or early February. So far I have gotten the awards from Cal Poly Pomona and UCSC. I am still waiting to hear from others.

BrownParent is right, you can expect to see some loans in your aid package.

Can you copy/paste your statement? Is it 7500 student and 2500 parent loan?

@luckie1367 @BrownParent Here is what it says

Conditional Cal Grant A $12,804.00
Conditional Federal Pell Grant Grant $5,775.00
Conditional University Grant Grant $4,644.00
Condtl UC Health Ins.Grant Grant $2,604.00
Condtl FDL Subsidized Loan Loan $5,500.00
FDL Unsubsidized Loan 1.073% Loan $2,000.00
Parent Loan Option-Apply 4.292 Loan $2,250.00

Aid Year Totals 35,577.00

What is your cost of attendance? is it 10k over your aid total?

The cost of attendance is $35,577.00 This is on campus for UCSC @luckie1367

…so everything is covered then? What was your EFC?

To be honest, your loan amount is not astronomical. I know it is preferred to not take out loans, but 35.5k in education for 9.95k is an amazing deal.

You can always call the FA office and ask for more, or go line by line through the FAFSA to make sure everything is correct.

@luckie1367
EFC was 0.

Not that I’m not grateful for what they are covering, but I just want to understand how someone with a lot higher family income gets a full ride and I don’t.

They could be lying, or misinformed. How much did you make at your job?

@luckie1367 Would the UC make a difference? Because the people I am talking about went to UCLA, and they told me they did not take any loans. Both of them are middle class.
I made about 14K at my job, but that barely covered our family bills.

Many people think full-tuition is a full-ride. They also could have had savings that they used to cover the amount of the loans. They also could have won scholarships from UCLA or whenever they transferred from. I’m most likely looking at 3,000 from my current CCC.

I’m sorry you thought more would be covered, it can be a major bummer. Did your package come with possible work study? that could take off 2,000.

To be honest, I’m not sure if UC makes a difference. It might. Where else have you applied?

@onmyownway They did get some UCLA scholarships, so I was expecting UCSC scholarships, but they’re not mentioned in my aid award, so I don’t know if they might be posted later or if this is it. I copy pasted the package on this thread, so I don’t see work study mentioned, unless I am looking at the wrong section of my awards.
Hopefully I get into UCLA and hopefully I get a little more coverage.

@luckie1367 i’ve applied to UCI, UCB, & UCLA

I’m curious to see @Mia0Mia , I wish I could be of more help! I second the thought to ask for Work Study, since that can be 2-3k a year.

I have a ton of respect for you supporting yourself and your mother though! Do you live near any of the UCs, and can commute from home? That’s what I plan on doing since my job won’t pay for a UC.

@luckie1367 Unfortunately I live about 8 hours away from UCSC, and the nearest UC is an hour away. So I rather live on campus than worry about driving back and forth two hours a day. I don’t understand why I am not qualified for work study, I check marked it on my FAFSA application. But I guess the best option is to contact them directly and find out.

Thank you for your help!

Ah, I see. Please keep us updated!

Yes I think UCLA has more university grants to give and they also have alumni scholarships. I would have hoped you at least would have the suggested parent loan as a university grant since you are a Pell grant eligible and therefore very low income. Have you checked if there are any department scholarships to apply for?

You can request w/s, but in the end it is not money given to you. It is pay from a job you can try for, you still have to be hired. Even without formal w/s you can try for a p/t job.
