Why am I not getting a full ride?

@lindyk8 I completely agree. They are acting like they’re the only students working hard. Point is an education costs money and you’re battling it out with many other students for the same funds to cover that. $9,500 in loans is perfectly normal. If people don’t believe it, maybe they should explore the threads on how people are paying triple that.

That doesn’t even make sense because you can’t get more aid than COA. People can save money by buying used books, renting books, cheaper apartment, etc. But no school will you give “extra money.”

@luckyname Of course it makes no sense. Giving out extra money?

I don’t believe anyone gets a full ride without at least work study, because of the very fact that not putting any effort out makes a person not try. If these ppl that she is so envious of do have a full ride, they obviously got extra scholarships. If my daughter, who works, started boo-hooing like this, I would absolutely be distraught at the lack of gratitude. The UCs didn’t have to admit anyone or give out any aid. No one is owed anything.

@lindyk8 its absolutely true, God forbid they get accepted into a Ivy league with a 120k bill

I only saw one person (from last year) that got a full ride. I think they were an ex gang member. Getting a full ride requires luck, extraordinary circumstance, and hard work. Just about everyone is working hard, but most do not have the other two.

^^^^ exactly @wouldyoukindly, only the elite! :))

@lindyk8 He also was non-traditional and had children. Where does the privilege end?

This topic is unnecessarily dragging on without a point.

Thank you to those who provided insight!

@Mia0Mia "It is just a disappointment when you hear all these stories of people working hard and getting college covered, so then you sacrifice your time, energy and peace to get there but are left with a “standard"reward. I’m glad the loans are little, but i feel like my diligence deserved more credit.”

You can always join the military and get your schooling paid for. It’ll give you a new perspective on sacrifice, time, energy, and peace. Possibly on entitlement as well.

@briank82 One can have various perspectives on sacrifice of time, energy and peace without joining the military. Whether it is losing your parents, being homeless, or living with cancer. However, it is a lot easier to judge behind the computer.

@Mia0Mia I would just stop commenting. I had to quit school to work full-time and support my mother, and it sucks that I’ll have to take out 10,000 in loans because I doubt I will be able to juggle working full-time and going to school full-time, but people will always think we’re acting entitled and spoiled. Um, not having any family to fall back on and achieving top grades is no easy task. Just remember their words are about their own issues, not about you. Good luck! I hope you get great scholarships to UCLA!

@Mia0Mia but here you are comparing yourself to others without knowing full stories. you’re here stating that you believe your work is more important than others and for that reason you should be granted a full ride, when in fact NOBODY receives full rides anymore.

I am also a psychology major. My GPA is higher than yours. I can probably say my personal statements were stronger than yours because I spoke about “something” that is surely to lead me to a young death. I have participated in research conferences. Im in the honors program at my school and also in different clubs. I got my first job at 15 years old. But according to your logic, I should be receiving more money than you, when in fact that is not true. I’m receiving less grants than you are.

Every time you post, you just get more offensive and it’s not funny anymore. 10k in loans is the standard amount. This is the last post I will be making in this thread. Good luck to you.

I agree that one can. Still, nothing in this life is free and the notion that you should be rewarded more than you already have simply for doing well in school screams nothing but entitlement.

Imagine if everyone wanted more just for doing what is expected of them.

@onmyway8 Thank you very much, and best of luck to you in everything!

I’m not asking the UC to give me “extra money”, I’m just telling stories heard from my friends… Like I said, I think what I’ve got it’s standard.

if your package includes grants that pay for tuition, and part of your room and board, your friends (or you) may indeed receive ‘extra money’ at billing time that is refunded to you. However, that ‘extra money’ is for your
cost of attendance items - books, transportation, fees, personal expenses - AND that ‘extra money’ is really
just the money from your student loans which you have to pay back later! I think a lot of atudents don’t understand that part, just the fact that the univ is giving them money.

Wow…I am just so grateful that Blue and Gold will be covering my tuition and some fees. It never occurred to be to expect my regular living expenses to also be paid. I’ve been self-supporting since age 16, and at no time have I expected to not have to do so. That’s just being a grown up. You either work, take loans, or both while in school. Seek out scholarships to reduce the burden. It’s an honor and a privilege to be accepted to a UC. I applied to them, they didn’t head hunt for me lol.

Maybe instead of asking for a free ride the OP could ask how to earn one.

Hello guys! I have a question Is it required for you to take out loans if you’re going to accept the grants/scholarships ? ( blue and gold for example) Thank you!

@maieunice Not at all! The loans are just there if you need them, but the grants and scholarships that you are offered are yours no matter what
