I'm a sophomore and yesterday I moved back to school. My family lives 12 hours away from me so I only get to see them for Christmas and summer. My mom and I have a really close relationship. She's honestly my best friend, which is why I always miss her a lot when I'm away.

Last year when I left it wasn't nearly as hard. I was definitely sad, but I managed to get over it. This year, however, I can't stop crying every time I think about it. I feel like such a crybaby. Shouldn't it be easier the second time instead of harder?

Anyway, if anyone understands or has anything to say, I would really appreciate it.

This is my first year away from home. I’m pretty sad too. If you have friends you shouldn’t be too sad. I have none. I haven’t made any friends yet. I’ve only been here for a couple of days but I’m taking it pretty hard. You’re not alone on the sad part. But if you have friends you shouldn’t be too sad. At least you have someone. I don’t :(

You know, no matter how old you are, it’s always a bit difficult to live far away from family and friends. The good news is that technology now allows you to be in touch and even looking at each other in an instant, so it isn’t as hard as it used to be to hear from home when you need to. I’m 46, and I miss friends and family that live far away. Get active in your school community again, reconnect with friends, and skype or facetime, whatever, when you need to! Your mom is excited for you, proud of you, and wants you to grow and succeed. Call home before she has to ask you to, and tell her all the great things going on in your life! It’s natural and nice that you miss your mom. Lots of kids have horrible relationships with their parents and can’t stand them.

Hi Meagan. I’m in my third (and final) year at college, and I’ve been experiencing the same thing. You would think that having done it once (or twice) already, it would be easier/quicker to deal with the next time; unfortunately, it sometimes isn’t.

I’m not sure what exactly can make it easier. But I think that simply reminding yourself that it is just a temporary situation can do a lot. Sure, it is difficult now; but you’ll be done soon enough, so try your best to get through it.

What you need to do is get some friends. Never sit alone otherwise you would get severely depressed. Do not hesitate to start a conversation in elevator, class, dining halls etc and after you talk to them for like 10 min, ask for the # or add them on facebook. Send a text saying lets goto dinner or lets meet for this class etc. You have to make the effort to get some solid friends.
