pot heads? I don't mean that in a negative connotation but a lot of really smart people smoke weed, is there a correlation?

Not to be a jerk, but no. I think the answer is that a lot of people smoke weed in general, regardless of intelligence.

define smart?

I’m guessing drug use, of any kind, is negatively correlated with intelligence.

prove it

I think so too

Painting your room negatively correlates with intelligence.
Using a cell phone negatively correlates with intelligence.

Most things which cost significant amounts of money correlate positively with intelligence. Smarter people have more money. Luxury goods especially.

You don’t have to be smart to make money. Businessmen and entrepreneurs must have a big personality, and some “brains,” I suppose.

Then you have c"Rappers," hip-hop artists, etc.

Outliers, anyone?

That might be your answer - weed is not cheap.

For marijuana specifically, speaking in general over the entire population, you’re probably right. But I don’t think this is the case on college campuses (which is likely what TC is referring to).

I’ll throw this out there - marijuana use and alcohol use tend to be fairly mutually exclusive, (i.e. most potheads if given the choice, would prefer to get high than drunk).

The difference is marijuana does not continue to hammer you the next morning (and afternoon…and evening…). Not to mention the quality of sleep you get high is far better than drunk (which is really ****-poor - which is why people are always tired even after their hangover passes).

If you’re going to get really drunk, you are essentially dedicating a lot of time to the recovery, in addition to the process. With marijuana, your Sunday can still be perfectly productive if you smoked Saturday night.

Sure, but you agree with me in your next sentence, so I don’t understand.

Disagree with this as well. I think drug use (included marijuana) is negatively correlated with intellect (even within colleges).

Heh, since we are both relying on anecdotal evidence, I think the point is moot.

But, re-reading the TC’s sentence, I noticed that’s not even the point. They are NOT claiming a general correlation between marijuana use and intelligence, they are claiming that many (ok, “all”, but I think we may assume the intended meaning is “many”) of the smartest people they know use weed.

Addressing this point is just a natural extension of my previous argument. Before anyone says it: yes, it is more productive to do neither alcohol nor weed. This is known as locking yourself in your room and studying all day instead.

My argument, however, is the “truly smart” people don’t NEED to study nearly as much to destroy a curve or work as hard to do well on a project. This is attributable to their high intelligence. What that means is they have more FREE TIME.

As it is a college campus, many inevitably stumble across marijuana in their free time and not surprisingly, enjoy it. Their intelligence allows them to continue doing it while still doing very well in their classes.

I smoke cigarettes. Why? I like doing it. Do I know it will probably kill me one day? Yes. Am I going to stop? I doubt it, and if I do, it won’t be because I want to.
I drink alcoholic beverages. Why? I love doing it. Do I know it probably kills brain cells? Yes. Am I going to stop? I doubt it, and if I do, it won’t be because I want to.
I do exceedingly well in school and handle lots of responsibility with ease. The people I know all consider me to be very intelligent, and I don’t have to work hard at it.
Have I tried weed? Yes. Did I like it? No. But if I had, I would still be smoking it today.
Have I tried popping pills? Yes. Did I like it? Yes. But I gave it up because the negative effects outweighed the positive effects it had on me. Not for moral qualms.
Basically, intelligence has nothing to do with what you do. Intelligence is who you are. Wisdom comes with experience, and experience comes with age. The vast majority of people in college are too young to have real wisdom. Those that profess to have it are merely regurgitating the wisdom of others… and borrowed wisdom is irrelevant.

^^

Oh wow, I am guessing your one of those sub 2000 SATers LOL

LOL ;D… <-drooling from laughter

Some people look really smart until the interviewer says, “Your package looks great. We’d like to bring you on board. Can you report on Thursday for our mandatory drug test?”

Then they don’t look so smart.

Personally, I would decline employment with any corporation requiring mandatory drug tests. I’m sorry, I just have more respect for myself than that.

I think it’s more that you are surprised that an intelligent person smokes, so it has more of an impact.

This is very true, not only for marijuana but for most mind altering chemicals. The harder the drug, the smarter you will become. It has been experimentally verified and published in journals such as Nature and most recently, Science and the New England Journal of Medicine. I recommend smoking a bowl of hydroponic weed, followed by snorting an eight ball of cocaine. Drink a liter of Moonshine, then chase it by sniffing heavy duty paint thinner for at least half an hour. Remember to inhale deeply and keep the fumes in your lungs for as long as possible, then proceed to exhale slowly. Additionally, find a nice clean needle and syringe and inject a few milliliters of pure heroine into your blood stream. Follow this by popping a few pills of ecstacy, then crushing some Xanax into fine powder than snorting it. Finally if you want to be extra, super duper smart you have to drink at least a cup of industrial strength pet urine stain remover. The strongest you can find, none of that cheap crap. What will follow after all of this is guaranteed accolades such as the Field’s Medal and/or Nobel Prize. You will also become the president of the United States, and the vice president of the United States. Which one you ask?? the answer is, you will be so great, that you will be both.

^^Awesome!!!
