Why is it so many ppl say that UCB students are weird, too liberal, treehuggers and hippes?? I mean i think UCB is one of the best schools in the nation but i just get kinda scared off when ppl say most ppl their are like this...

They want to be part of the in crowd.

Rappers hug trees. Why aren't they hippies?

o but they are............

Probably because they sit in trees and smoke pot.

the area is funky.
hang out with non-hippies and make yourself a non-hippie. when people ask, you tell them that you dont know any. now you tell people that most of the people you know are conservative. problem solved.

what the eff?

Berkeley has this reputation because of the school's participation during the civil right's movement in the 1960's. nowadays it's supposed to have a wide range of political views, etc.

Berkeley as a city is probably one of the most liberal in the country.

A friend of mine who currently goes to UCB came up with the analogy "getting caught by the cops in Berkeley for smoking weed is like getting caught by a lifeguard for swimming."

Considering Berkeley's reputation for maniacal liberal politics... well, you get the idea.

In my experience, it's the city more than the school that carries on the liberal hippy tradition. In fact, the university and the city are often at odds with each other in these matters, such as in the cities' refusal to get rid of the tree sitters. Most of the students seem apathetic towards politics and focused on their own success, much like students at any other school.

Its a bunch of people just trying to be cool. or at least I think. I went to CU Boulder for a few years, and they have quite a few hippies. I cant tell you how many people in my dorm were "normal" one day, and then snap* they were in Birkenstock's , hemp clothing, and smelled weird.
Then you have your hippies who are standing in groups cursing pollution, cops, etc, but sneak around the corner to not get caught hopping into their range rover..... Its funny ****.
Anyway, I guess what Im saying is, alot of people try to change their image when they go to college, and when there are already hippies, they just take that route.

Where do you see these bunches of hippies? All I see is dedicated students and a few people who are involved in clubs of all types (some liberal, some not).

There are tons of hippies who are long time Berkeley residents. But, the typical student hippy is a myth, at least in this day and age.

I just want to make sure people don't make assumptions about the student body based upon Berkeley's reputation.

^^^I think evo9 was talking about students at CU Boulder.

I think the reputation that Berkeley has is due to the young people who hang out on Telegraph, not on campus, whether they are students or not (probably most of them are not students).

Ya I was talking about CU, but when I was in Berkeley I saw a similar crowd. I agree with the above comments, it was more throughout the town than at the campus.

Over here in Virginia that's the impression I always had of Berkeley, because that's what I've always heard about it.

Why do people think Cal is an acronym?

Same reason they think Cal is full of hippies: Most people don't really pay attention. ;)

i dont think ppl think its an acronym..Its just the cool way to say it..dont you want to be cool...

I think he was referring to the title of this thread being CAL when in should be Cal =)
