What is encouraging is that more or more Indian students are able to go abroad for undergraduate education.

hey guys!! ssup?
im new to this thread …just wanted to ask a question…
i think i hv aprettygood chance at iit. ive applied to rice cooper union univ of minnesota nd purdue nd think ill get into all of these.
mech engg major
which , according to u, should i choose, iit or one of the above?
the question is v relevant coz i hv to reply to these univs by may1 nd the iit result is gonna come out mon may26 of this year…also ,can we transfer outta iit to one of these colleges after freshman year???

Do you mean the Indian Institute of Technology or the Illinois Institute of Technology?

@ansrox- If you can elaborate more on your aims and priorities, I would be pleased to help you as a fellow JEE taker :)

Why dont all americans go to Harvard, Princeton, Yale, MIT, CalTech, Stanford, Columbia, Datmouth, Amherst, Swarthmore, Pomona, Brown, Duke and Williams?

Answer- Coz its friggin hard to get into. Same with IITs.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooobbbbbbbbbbbbsssssssssssss

Gary, change your location :P

You forgot to include The Weed College in your list. Ooops, I forgot. It is too elite to be part of any list.

[just joking, no need to get worked up]

An LAC in US has the same facilities as an IIT does…(I have been to kharagpur). Plus hardly any serious research stuff is done there. The main reason of the difficulty to enter is the population and the basis of ONLY RANK. No holistic approach. If your luck is great that day you can be an IITian.
Last year I gave the exam (i’m on a gap year) studied nothing at all and managed a rank of 10912. But didn’t chose from the institutions ( you cannot expect a good course with this rank). Its mostly luck…but it is no doubt the most difficult exam at this level. SAT seems way to easy compared to IIT-JEE.

@WhollyGlib- The IITs have a lower acceptance rate than all of those colleges mentioned in the list. Just Saying :)!

The IITs have a lower acceptance rates, because everyone in india applies, even if they are not so bright.
Here, only smart people apply HYPS types. They’re a lot more realistic here in the US

And I am talking in general terms.

I think we have beaten this to death.

Here are the points I gathered from this chit-chat:

[ol]
[] Not all bright students in India want to do engineering.
[] There are very very few good liberal arts colleges in India.
[] Standard of liberal arts education in India is very poor.
[] Admission rate @ IITs is very low.
It is easier to get into an american college that is just as good or better than any iit. FA is the main hurdle.
[] Even if one gets into an IIT he/she may not get to study subject of interest. EE/CS is the most difficult dept to get into.
[] IIT education is one-dimensional.
[] Impossible to double major at any Indian college.
[] Coming to america gives a chance to experience a different culture and mingle with students from everywhere.
[li] Education is never interrupted or delayed by unnecessary strikes.[/li][/ol]

Did I miss anything? Satisfied? Everybody happy?

P.S: IIT != Illinois Institute of Technology

^^^
Exactly…and i’m talking about Indian Institute of Technology. The greatest hype in India.
Umm…i dont think you have missed any point.
Aahhh…In India people try to be JUST like his Next-Door-Neighbor.

Lollllll gary :D
