Another reason for massive no of iit applicants:
It doesn’t cost a bomb!!

What do u need help with?

What makes u think u’ll get into IIT? Have u already taken JEE? or Do u belong to one of those privileged SC/ST that makes u confident that u can get in?

@ansrox those are good universities in your list.

According to AWRU here are their standings:
[ul][] Cornell 10
[li] Berkeley 3[/li][li] Purdue **42/b[/li][] Rice 54
[li] University of Minnesota (TC) 20[/li][li] Cooper Union - not in the list, primarily an undergrad school like most LACs.[/li][/ul]

BTW, it is always possible to dig up another ranking if the schools one is interested in don’t figure prominently in a given list.

Does anybody know anything about the NRI quota?

quota for what? AFAIK green card holders are treated the same way as citizens.

AIEEE is also ridiculously competitive. 1 million candidates - top 50000 are considered passed. After rank 20000, you cannot get into a top tier college. JEE pushes the boundaries though. This year there are some 4.15 lakh applicants for 8000 seats. Even if you omit the 1 lakh who are giving it for kicks, it is a crazy process.

Hey aieee is competitive but not anywhere close to the iit sense of competition.
And yeah u ever heard of fiit jee man? I’ve been getting a 95-96 percentile on their test continuously and predicted rank below 2000 so on the safer side I can atleast say I’ll get selected.

Tippusultan I really really wanna get into cornell…it’s got a really cool tata scholarship for Indians so I don’t get bankrupt and from the sound of it I’ve started to love That place.I really wanted to know yr take on whether I can get in or not…nd no I’m not obc sc st vimukt jati nomadic tribe etc…
One more reason to get outta India :the reservation ie quota is hilariously high!

@ansrox Sorry, I don’t know much about Cornell. There is someone on TiT #18 thread (winsdom86) who got into Cornell ED and that person might be able to give u some feedback. I didn’t know Tata’s offered scholarship to go to Cornell. Good luck.

@ansrox Post no #61 Well making a bomb cost much less than the IITJEE Application Form.
Congo on your 95-96 percentile in FITJEE. But don’t trust that too much.

yes iit is a good and has exceptional quality of education and provides value if your only goal in life is to get a so called good job but when it comes to creativness iit loses how many iitians have won a nobel prize or does iit has multi billion dollar funding for research in india people push this job paranoia too much and the creativeness of a indivisual gets lost in the process.iit is a waste of time and talent.

satmaster9, you got it exactly right.

ansrox, Know about any other scholarships, and can you give some more info on the TATA one please!

Ya phoenix I guess I get carried away easily. Neways I just wanna have some safety college which in my case I’d like to be iit.thanks tippusultan fr the link

Kushalck the tata trust donated about 50mn$ for Indian students which r used to give scholarships. Elgibility:Indian citizen studied in an Indian secondary school for the past 2 years.
Google tata scholarship cornell
They give it to needy students out of the 400 Indians that are admitted as graduates and undergraduates.
I don tknow of any other schol but cornell has got need based fin aid(awesome!) and their decision is not based on whetheror not u apply. Fr aid

@ansrox- Actually, it covers need-based aid requirement of ~25 students. But since the scholarship funds come from TATA, and not Cornell, it will be more inclined to pick the ~25 as the most needy students. That coupled with the students who get in with no aid requirements make Cornell the easiest ivy to get into for Indians.
P.S. Ratan Tata TATA FTW!

So I guess I just have to hope I get in and am the most needy…I can’t pay more than 10 grand a year 15 max. Family income is shown to be 33 grand so I guess I qualify to be NEEDY. Hehe… Ya I hope u r right in tht cornell is comparatively easy to get into…
Thts why iits are cool u can study without filing for bankruptcy

Poverty(by US standards that is), my friend is a CHALLENGE. NOT an EXCUSE.
I don’t understand what a ‘grand’ is. But for all practical purposes, most of my sciency friends and myself ned a min. of ~90% FA. In fact, most of the JEE type applicants come from families like ours. So don’t worry about that. Just do your best. There are may other colleges out there who give good aid to us. For starters, look at my college list-
Princeton
U Chic
Yale
HMC
U Penn
Reed
Amherst
Harvard
Stanford
MIT
Williams
Cornell

If your app is stellar, then they’ll find a way to make you come.

I never guessed ratan tata would rise out of the ashes and save me from the money thirsty colleges… Ratan tata TatA FTW!!!

Grand =1000
I applied to Princeton but I’ll climb everest if I get in with 2070 I missed the u of chic deadline by a day and a few of the above are lacs … I’m not getting into harvard Princeton MIT Stanford etc even if Its my lcky day. I’m just hoping for the best. Where hv yallapplied??
