Has anybody here used them? what's the disadvantage?

because what checks your paper is a computer and if you used a mechanical pencil it will be so rough and if you try to change your answer it will appear to the computer that you have marked two answers so your question will be canceled !! i only use them for my essay so my handwriting can be as neat as possible !! for shading use a #2 pencil and get a very good eraser !! good luck !! :)

I used mechanical pencils for all my standardized tests and did fine.

i used both -mechanical and regular pencils, regular for bubbling and mechanical for writing in the booklet (i hate dull pencils!). maybe i forgot and used a mechanical a few times for shading.
i got 3 omitted questions in math, and i know i did not skip any.
i ordered hand scoring, but it takes forever. i'll post when i know.
hope i'll get my 50 bucks back.

I heard that they ban mechanical pencils so that kids can't cheat by clicking them in code. Who knows?

yeah, and you can sneak in a tiny dictionary inside lol

Well I heard one guy got caught using a mechanical pencil when he was writing his general info on the front. anyways all they did was take him into another test room to do another test and gave him a different pencil.

... you click them in code? I've never heard that one before.

using that logic I could tap my pencil on a desk, or stomp my foot on the ground. what is collegeboard going to do next, make us take a test in a room of rubber?

It's because there's this type of lead going around that makes the scantron machine pick up no answer even if you did put an answer.

Maybe they just want to be anal.

You can definitely use mechanical pencils, even though the rules forbid them. I think that ETS is concerned that certain types of mechanical pencils may make impressions that are too light to be picked up by the scantron, although unless you are using some special "art pencils," you should really have no problem.

I think it will not make a big difference if someone uses a mechanical pencil......anyway, it's safer to use no-2 pencil.

Isn't the lead used in most mechanical pencils HB hardness which is supposed to be equivalent to #2 pencils anyways?

I've used mechanical pencil. I've also used a no. 3 pencil on accident (I didnt even knew ppl made no 3 pencils).

Maybe that's why I scored so low when I used no.3...

Even though it shouldnt matter, since the scantron will usually pick up any type of mark.

2 pencils have the highest graphite content and the machine reads it the best
