Hey! I am really thinking about goin to CMC next year but I want some student insights. My parents are worried that since it isn't a very "well-known" school (well, we live in Nebraska!) that it would be hard for me to get into med school and the population is too small. What made you all chose CMC? I'm coming to visit the 16th for the admitted student day but what was your experience like?

The people who need to know about CMC (medical schools etc.) know about it…that shouldn’t be something that holds you back from coming here if you really like the school

“Furthermore, two years ago 100% of CMCs pre-med students got into their first or second choice medical school, hinting at CMCs academic prowess.”

Do you guys think that going to a small not so well known liberal arts college will hurt in the long run compared to going to a more well known national university?

You will have no problems getting into top graduate schools from CMC. Graduate schools know about CMC without question. The only time I might be slightly concerned is if I were seeking employment immediately after graduation. However, this too will not be an issue with CMC as it might be with some other LAC’s (CMC has fantastic career services and an amazing placement record). I had this similar dilemma when I transferred to CMC. For me it was between Northwestern, WUSTL, and CMC. In the end, I want to go to grad school, so I knew that going to CMC wouldn’t have any negative impact on my chances.

Just a thought from someone who graduated from CMC in the mid-90s (keep in mind CMC is much more prestigious now than it was then)…virtually 100% of applicants got into med school; the joint science program (coupled with the opportunity to take classes at Pomona and Pitzer) is top notch; tons of research opportunities; classes small enough that professors know you and can write great letters of rec for med school or internships, and finally the opportunity to be around an amazing student body and have other opportunities if you change your mind about Med School.

CMC is well known among those who need to know. I had great research opportunities on campus, multiple internships at a national laboratory and graduated with honors (only 3-4 students were granted degrees with honors in Jt. Sci at CMC my year), but what was great about CMC was that when I decided I no longer wanted to go to Med School, I had tons of opportunities in an unrelated field (Management Consulting) b/c I was at Claremont. Many of the firms I interviewed with and ultimately received offers from, only interviewed at 3 places in California (Stanford, UCLA and the Claremont Colleges). I spent three years consulting and ended up being admitted to every (top 5) business school I applied to.

On top of all that, I got to be an athlete at CMC, had amazing financial aid (it was cheaper than Cal for me) and truly had a life changing experience…

I graduated in recent years from CMC and I am currently at the Yale School of Medicine. I got interviews and admissions to a bunch of top 10 schools, if you want to hear more about my take on being a premed at CMC, please private message me.

Congratulations!
Definitely go to WOA (the freshman pre-orientation trips) if you can. Also be prepared for the party scene it’s more intense than admissions makes it seem but it is very open, your CMC ID will get you in to any party on campus. Make sure you bring dress clothes with you for the Ath, and costume type stuff for theme parties. The ath is also an awesome place to work as a server because it gets you into talks you might not be able to see otherwise because you don’t get a reservation (I’ve seen most of the big speakers this year that way). Anything else you want to know?
