because I am undecided in my major, as are a lot of applicants i'm sure, is it ok to say that because columbia has the core it will introduce me to a broader range of classes that can either advance my knowledge in subjects i'm already good at or introduce me to new subjects which can potentially become my major?

I don’t see why not.

I think that’s a good one

It’s a solid reason, but I feel like a lot of applicants will write something along those lines.

I think the core is overused in the Why Columbia section and you should try to find something more unique to you - why only columbia can provide something particular for you. I really think columbia wants people who think out of the box a little and will also offer something of themselves to the school.

I didn’t write a lot about academics and core, etc, but focused on the atmosphere and activism that appeals to me instead.
In hindsight, talking about academics is probably pretty important for a Why Essay like Columbia’s. Shoot.

Activism is fine to talk about, but avoid talking about atmosphere if you mean talking about New York City. Columbia’s adcom knows how awesome NYC is and how that’s a big factor to everyone who applies.
