Why Columbia?

My school's college counselor gave me a list of schools that he wanted me to do some research on, and Columbia was one of them. What are the atmosphere, academic environment, and social atmosphere like? My main academic interests are math, chemistry, and economics.

One word: city. Seriously, NYC has everything, and I mean, EVERYTHING, virtually at your fingertips.

hey saints, read through some of my posts (especially threads i have started) about columbia, i give a pretty solid portrayal i think of various aspects, sure just my opinion, but a starting point. if you still have questions, feel free to ask.

The City and the core. That’s what the majority of students and alumni say.

Anyone who posts about everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, probably hasn’t lived in NYC for very long. NYC doesn’t do that good with certain foods (Mexican, BBQ, Vietnamese, Ramen, etc.). There’s no Walmart, Ikea, etc.

c02 - there is a walmart coming to brooklyn, a costco in spanish harlem, an ikea in brooklyn. bbq is actually fairly good (R.U.B., blue smoke, even columbia locals like rack and soul and dinosaur bbq are solid). mexican has its weaknesses, but places like the red hook ball fields are great - and “modern mexican” is huge with places like barrio chino or maya. and noodles in parts of chinatown, but especially in flushing are fantastic. parts of sunset park i still haven’t visited, but would just for the food. often the best places are not in the heart of Manhattan, but it doesn’t mean they aren’t in NYC. you could debate how good some of these foods are and i think you could say that you could find it better elsewhere in the US, but it is unique that all the cuisines are present in new york.

You could say the same thing – that all the cuisines are present even though each may not necessarily be the best – about a number of major cities, like London, SF, Bombay, Tel Aviv, etc. In my opinion, NYC and London are the two worldwide cities that do the widest range of cuisines excellently. But neither city does “everything, and I mean EVERYTHING” well.

It’s hardly at your fingertips to haul furniture from Red Hook to the West Side on multiple subway/bus lines.

they deliver, you could rent a zipcar, or take a water taxi. ha.
