Applied to their pharmacy school, thought of becoming a pharmacist. Did more research about it and the prospects of being a pharmacist have gone downhill. Job saturation. Low pay. No benefits. Have to move anywhere just to get a decent job. I’m wondering, should I major in pharmacy or continue to look for another major?
I was personally also at the same position you are in now. I was thinking of going into the pharmacy, and also applied to Rutgers, but after learning about the future of pharmacy and the amount of work needed to succeed, I decided to go into nursing. Although it may be quite different from pharmacy, I thought about it carefully and think that is the best thing for me.
If you really think pharmacy is definitely your interest and your passion, go for it!! If you are having second thoughts, you should reconsider your decision.
Best of luck!
I’m a student that applied to Rutgers Pharmacy last year (2015-2016). For me, applying to pharmacy was based on a few factors. For one, it’s a very competitive, well-regarded program, and arguably the most prestigious division at Rutgers. However, most importantly, it was more of a personal dilemma for me - I believed that I had an interest in the sciences, and desperately wanted to do pre-med, but was afraid of not getting into medical school. I am someone who enjoys stability, and the 6-year program at Rutgers guaranteed 100% that I would receive a PharmD, would be able to work as a pharmacist, and would experience good financial stability. In the end, I applied to SAS and Pharm, despite having stats that were around the 25% percentile for the pharmacy school. When I got in, I was beyond ecstatic - and absolutely certain I wanted to go. However, as time passed, my opinion started to change. I deeply and intensely researched the field, and realized that it is not truly that good of one to get into. Truth be told, there is no denying the fact that pharmacy is a saturated field. Although many may be experiencing success in the field, the fact of the matter is that it is becoming harder and harder for new graduates to secure employment. After some serious evaluation, I decided that it was not something that I wanted to go into - I came to the realization that perhaps it was not something that I wanted to tie myself down to, and maybe it would be better for me to attend another school and study pre-med, ultimately having the choice to change my major if my interests changed, something that would be hard to do at Rutgers Pharmacy, an accelerated program that really allows you to study one major - pharmacy. While I may have turned down Rutgers Pharmacy, that is not to say that you should too. If you are truly passionate about the field, go into it. However, if you are like me and applied for the same reasons (well regarded program, financial security, stability in the future), I would have to say, based on intense research and lots of reflection, that perhaps you should try something else. I ultimately chose to attend another school and do not at all regret my decision.
Thanks so much I was stressed over whether to do pharmacy or not, but after doing more research about it (by going on Reddit to ask people who have PharmDs and my cousin who works in the industry), I found out it is not longer the best career choice as it use to be. You don’t even make a 100k these days anymore, unless you found a job back then. But if it is bad now as of 2016, it will be much worse is 2022-2023. Besides, there is a surplus of pharmacists in the U.S., with new pharmacy schools releasing more and more grads with PharmDs.
