Why do people want to be "chanced" by other students?

Self explanatory, other high schoolers have (generally) never been accepted to a college. They have access to the same averages and information you do. ¿Is it all about getting an ego stroked over some schools?, because a lot of people also post reaches... I guess what I'm asking is, why not ask a college counselor? The phrase "I'll chance you back" seems particularly idiotic. You are asking someone to analyze your situation, with the prospect of you, who are admitting you need help, giving back assistance. This whole exercise seems pointless.

As far as I have found, here are the reasons people want to be chanced:

  1. To brag
  2. To get a critical analysis of their resume (for free)
  3. To verify what they already know
And it’s not just hs students that chance, it’s college students who have already gone through the process, and parents whose children have. But yes, there is very minimal validity to the entire exercise, and it’s mostly just a way of dealing with nerves.

Ps: People ask other students instead of college counselors because it’s free and easier.

When I post chances threads, I don’t “chance back” and I don’t take posts from other high schoolers seriously for obvious reasons mentioned above.

And in response to sirensong, I believe that anyone who has a 2200 to 2400 SAT and a 4.5 weighted who posts chances threads are mostly just bragging.
On the other hand, there are students like me (1600 to 1800 SAT and 3.4 to 3.8 weighted) who are actually trying to find the lines between reaches, matches, and safeties.

for me it has to do with insecurites about my own scores, ec’s, etc. i can chance myself, but it’ll prolly be biased because i don’t think one can truly look at oneself objectively, at least i can’t…
i guess ppl just want verification or refutation of what they already think. i think ppl who are confident may begin to second guess themselves and be like maybe i’m not all that great and i’m getting my hopes up. works same way other way around, it just gets you a second opinion i guess

I want to be ‘chanced’ because I know that this site has valuable information about colleges. Even if these are highscoolers who are doing the job, many know a lot more than me certain universities, and score statistics. College counselors are a great resource, but after mine recommended a particular college to me that had ‘a great neuroscience program’, I was a little skeptical. Turns out that this place hadn’t offered neuroscience in 4 years. Plus, this is all new to most of us. I want a second opinion. I want to know how I match up to other gifted students. I want to know if I have a SHOT at an Ivy League. (Don’t you wish) We’re all basically questioning our future.

HS students wanting chances can post “Other HS students, please don’t respond.” There are plenty of non-HS students out here.

As a high school student, I think it is a useful exercise for students who are undoubtedly going to have college on their mind and need to talk to someone about it.

Also, I think it is best when someone rates the schools as whether or not they are a match/reach/safety because it may show the OP whether or not they may need to put in more matches, or maybe more reaches.

^ These are great reasons why HS students should ask questions. :)

Which a lot of them seem to do in their chances threads, or at least from what I’ve seen. :')

What I think the OP finds perplexing is why HS students want other HS students to answer questions.

Yes, that’s perfectly clear.

Other high school students have had different perspectives than other high school students, as we have all watched seniors get accepted/rejected/waitlisted from schools. And honestly, if people are willing to offer answers, other people should take them… If not with a grain of salt.

because other students are going to be nicer than admissions officers and will help one get their hopes up
if a bunch of people tell me ____ college is a low reach i’ll feel like i’m already in there, and then i’ll feel happier until i don’t get in
