<p>I'm Asian, and I'm not going to lie, I am completely sick of the blatant steroetyping of Asians. However, it's not only people of other races who stereotype Asians; Asians stereotype Asians as well.</p>

<p>Example: I'm an Asian who loves theatre and writing and the social sciences. But when I meet an Asian, they automatically assume I'm planning to be a doctor or engineer. And if they find out I'm not, they act all surprised.
However, people of other races do the same.</p>

People are always talking crap about parents beating you for getting Bs, not letting you become anything but a doctor or engineer, or stopping you from having any social life. Some of it may be true to an extent, but I don't think that makes it right for people to say it to you, as if they knew anything...just the fact that they assume it's true is somehow offensive to me.</p>

<p>Asians aren't neccesarily SMART. Most Asians I know are average/below average. I know more smart Whites than smart Asians, and I'm Asian myself, but the fact is the White population in the U.S. is larger than the Asian population, so you can't really compare. My estimation from my school: 40/500 smart Whites compared to 1/10 smart Asians. </p>

<p>"Smart" isn't really an accurate term. I would say most Whites I know are more "CARE-FREE". Asian's are LESS "care-free" than Whites... okay... yeah... really... whatever...</p>

<p>As for the stereotypes, everyone hates stereotypes. But needless to say, most Asians these days don't really get stereotyped into the "nerdy, doctor/lawyer/engineer, anti-social" group. Most Asians I know are either scene punk, or (sigh) gangster. Very few are "nerds" even though they are "SMART".</p>

<p>It seems like Asian parents push their kids to be absolutely brilliant in high school, but reel them in in college to make sure they all become lawyers, engineers, and doctors (smart people, but they're not jobs that require extraordinary intelligence) instead of making the natural progression to theoretical physics, theoretical mathematics, and all those other fields that I couldn't possibly hope to comprehend.</p>

<p>I know an Asian kid who wants to go into metaphysics or something, but his parents want him to go into biotech business or something. He might as well have told them he wanted to be an actor (GASP!!!). </p>

<p>So all you Asians under the pressure out there, disobey your parents. Yes you love them, but that doesn't mean they get to control your life. They put a roof over your head, fed you, clothed you? That's **** they're SUPPOSED to do.</p>

<p>Well, I'm Chinese. I've always lived life as I liked to live it and built myself on my own expectations. My parents pushed me all through middle school to be the best, and in high school they continued pushing me -- they pushed me to stop pulling all nighters. I want to go into pre-med and become a surgeon, as well as take art as a minor -- my parents have nothing to do with it. I don't think anything is really worth pursuing unless you're doing it for yourself.</p>

<p>As for the stereotyping -- who the bloody hell cares? I personally find them hilarious, because they're just what they are: stereotypes. It's not as if every other person you meet doesn't have the brains to know that Asians are still individuals. They may act mock surprised, but unless they're utter fools, they wouldn't feel half the surprise they pretend to feel ["Oh my god! An Asian is trying to be a model! The world's ending!"]. In most cases, the people who partake in such are just making a joke and engaging in light humor. Some people just take things too seriously.</p>

<p>ticks me off. even teachers at my school don't say anything when they hear some of these things. but oh when some kid say " go back to africa" or " go eat some corn bread u blackie" to a black person, they get slammed for it. and they should because that's wrong. but what erks me is that teachers think it's nothing majior just cus asians usually don't lose control cus they are taught to show strength and no emotion when it comes to a hateful situation</p>

<p>we have not had a majior up rising. has there been an asian riot? a majior one? the next time a Vincent Chin happens, we must rise up. in any way.</p>

<p>Hm? What would constitute an "Asian riot," anyway? Riots are (usually) undertaken by members of society at the lower rungs of the social ladder. This somewhat precludes vast swaths of Northeast Asian-heritage Americans from having a reason to riot. However, whether or not you include Filipinos, Hmong, and Indians in your "Asian riot" construct, I don't know.</p>

<p>and yes i was gogin to reply that m/b whites and blacks just haven't seen discrimination toward asians. but then i got to thinking... asians are all over the usa. there are more asian resturants (mainly chinese and japanese) than wendy's mcdondel, and KFC COMBINED!!! it's a fact, from new york time a couple years ago. so my point is, ppl has to have been around some asians in their life so it has to be because they think that it's not discrimination. </p>

<p>there was talk of a riot when Vincent Chin was killed brutelly with a baseball bat by 2 white racists. they were let go with a small fine. </p>

<p>so there are reasons to riot. yes m/b we will never have the bleeding history of slavery to buster our cause. but their are many different types of slavery. and the modern one may not be outwardly displayed but it is there.</p>

<p>Okay...I still don't get your point. Just because people are around Asians doesn't mean that they EXPERIENCE any instances of discrimination against Asians. For example, my eventual family-in-law are all Asian, and both my girlfriend and her family can't really articulate much in the way of instances of discrimination. I imagine that once you leave the coasts it gets worse, but from where I'm at, discrimination against Asians is almost unheard of.</p>

<p>Slavery? Outside of sweatshops, I can't think of any examples of slavery in the US. This is a strong statement. Back it up.</p>

<p>An interesting, and recent, case crossed my mind as much more pertinent to the present. Wen Ho Lee's maltreatment by the Justice Department arguably was due to ethnic profiling. But I think many people downplay the factors other than his ethnic background: mishandling and sales of government secrets are incredibly important issues. Aldrich Ames, the Rosenbergs, and others have seriously compromised national security for money. It's not like fears of security breaches are just something spawned out of thin air.</p>

<p>Regardless, his case was an awful example of how the system can be a terrible beast when not controlled. Hey, at least he got an apology and a book deal. :rolleyes:</p>
