why do you love williams?

self-explanatory :)

list anything you LOVE about the school

I'm a mom and will reply only if you don't get student replies. I know my S does not coe on CC.

I will break from my misgivings about Williams.

Reasons to love Williams:
1. When they say that the professors are great, they mean it. Professors here are consistently open to seeing students outside of class and are wonderful to talk with.

The location is beautiful. Watching the mountains change color, so much greenery, you get the idea.

Very easy to eat healthy here.

I will stop here...to go on more would mean I have to start including why Williams is a bad place for the non-WASP.

My S is very happy at Williams and he is not the least bit Wasp. Honest. And no private school. And we're not rich. And he's not tall. He is cute.

This is more circumstantial...but I know a Williams alum who went back to Williamstown for his reunion thing, and he was coming from Hungary. So, I guess, alumni network??

I actually knew very few WASPs at Williams.. It seemed like a lot of the White kids were either part Jewish or Irish-Catholic

"I will stop here...to go on more would mean I have to start including why Williams is a bad place for the non-WASP."

^^probably the truest piece of information on this board. As a non-wasp, I definitely feel this school is an un-inviting place for minorities, especially african americans

**Nice to see you're still on these boards, MikeyD

I disagree strongly with the assertion that Williams is hostile or un-inviting for minorities. As a minority alum, I found the place was very welcoming as long as you were willing to actually reach out and bother to engage with different people from different backgrounds. IMHO, much of the campus' supposed cultural homogeneity is a self-fulfilling prophecy due to minorities consciously isolating themselves within ethnic cliques.

Assuming Teltar is either Hispanic or Black, I would say the statement holds.

crnchycereal, therein lies the central criticism of Williams: that, relative to other schools, Williams lacks a venue for minorities to (comfortably) socialize amongst themselves. As for cultural homogeneity, that is a given on such a small campus. I think what Teltar is getting at is that Williams is a thoroughly WASPy school, which it is, and that little cultural reprisal exists outside of SOCA, the BSU, MINCO, et. al.

While I agree that students should reach out to different people from different backgrounds, in my personal experience, little diversity exists apart from the white, east coast, suburban New York, private school, WASP typology. Certainly there are white students who don't fall into this category, but they are few in number. It is best to be honest with prospective students, and admit that little socialization exists between this group and others.

While we are on the subject, there are differences between minority groups on campus. Minorities do not all fit into a singular group; there are ethnic minorities, and what could be called "white-washed" minorities. Certainly, these groups do not even socialize among each other. I guess what Teltar is saying is that Williams might not be an appropriate fit for the ethnic minority.

wasp?

So williams isnt a good fit for the minorities?
