I tried looking through other threads, and people who got letters consistently from colleges are just considered to be in the marketing range of the college. Still, the thing that escapes me the most is I am not that much of a excellent student, or the type of student they have listed as a standard on their website. Believe me I would love to go to CalTech, but I just don't get what they see in me at all?

You probably checked the box on your PSAT that said you want to be contacted by colleges.

Yes, like other colleges CalTech buys names from College Board and other organizations and they do not have much information other than possibly the PSAT scores. CalTech also targets women and URM’s (under represented minorities) in their outreach. CalTech unlike other top schools clearly states that they do not practice Affirmative Action (AA).

Instead their stated objective is to reach out to as many women and URM’s that they can, and get them to apply so that they find the applicants with the qualifications they are looking for. In other words they are trying to increase the pool applicants from those categories and if you belong to one or both of those categories, and your PSAT scores are good, you are a likely candidate.

Ok, thanks you guys.
