I’m wondering because if there is a good reason, maybe I’ll try to take it too? Does it help with AP English classes or other classes?
It is considered one of the easier AP classes and many find the topic interesting. Only take it if you want to.
I took it my junior year and had a great experience. The class is very interesting if you have an engaging teacher. I learned skills to help me better understand myself and the people around me and even decided to most likely pursue a career in psychology. I highly, highly recommend the course!
Two words: easy class. It’s a good introduction to the AP pace, and psychology is interesting. Psych helped me with English, but just because for “self discovery” papers I did cool psychology topics like Maslows Hierarchy — which you’ll soon learn!
I’m not sure ‘everyone’ does. But it can help you understand your helicopter parents a little better. (Joking, kind of. Not really. I think having a good understanding of people is a good life skill. Not sure you need AP Psych to get that).
It’s helpful from the standpoint of padding your resume with an additional AP class and it’s one of the easier AP classes. At my kid’s HS, both AP Psych and AP Comp Sci A (also an easy class if you have previous programming experience) are only allowed to be taken by 12th graders and most take one or the other - mostly boys for AP CS and girls for AP Psych.
One should assume that if everyone here knows that some AP classes are easy, that admissions officers know it as well. So “padding” may not have been the best word choice.
Not everyone does.
I took AP Psych 3 years ago, and even though it was seen as a joke class, I thoroughly enjoyed everything I learned it in. It even inspired me to take extra psychology classes in college like Abnormal Psychology, Health Psychology, and Neurodevelopmental Disorders. I’m not sure if it helps with other AP classes, but if you like to learn more about yourself and other people, go for it!
I see lots of people saying AP Psych is easy or a “joke class”. At my school, this was most definitely not the case. That class is a LOT of work, with weekly readings, reading packets, study guides, and vocabulary, in addition to monthly projects. Probably for that reason, not many people take the class–maybe 50 students each year in a school of 1300.
It’s another easy A on your report card, plus it’s an AP course.
