Why doesn't CC list USC as a "Top University"?

CC maintains a list of "Top Universities" that includes Rice with 18,000 posts and 1,600 topics and Emory with 12,000 posts and 1,400 topics. USC has 40,000 posts, 3,700 topics and the #1 football team in the nation. Why isn't USC listed as a "Top University"?

This has always bugged me too- here are some old discussions about it-

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=287395&highlight=%22top+university%22%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=287395&highlight=%22top+university%22</a>

Because they hate us.

Thanks for the links, CC411. I'm amazed that this is still happening after being clearly discussed a couple of years ago! I agree with monydad's standard: that the CC "Top Universities" should be those schools that generate the most interest and posts. Let's compare USC (as of today, 40,616 posts) to the schools currently listed on the "Top Universities" list that do not have the same level of demonstrated CC interest or posts.
CalTech 15,465 posts
Carnegie Mellon 16,076 posts
Duke 31,977 posts
Emory 12,450 posts
Georgetown 22,200 posts
JHU 20,118 posts
Northwestern 25,616 posts
Rice 18,674 posts
UNC Chapel Hill 12,481 posts
Notre Dame 15,604 posts
Virginia 26,373 posts
Vanderbilt 8,682 posts
Wash St Louis 17,098 posts
It seems like a little room at the "Top" could be created for a school with 40,616 posts and the #1 football team. Isn't it time now?

Here's another thought: last year, 33,979 high school students applied for admission to USC. Doesn't that seem like a lot of high school students who could use some CC advice? Even, UCLAAri, if it's to also apply to UCLA.

I think there's a petition process you can go through to get USC on the Top Univ. section. I remember reading a thread about it somewhere...

There's no "petition process" but some have tried-
NYU tried a petition- They got 54 to put there names up and they are still not a Top University-
<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=324792&highlight=NYU+petition%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=324792&highlight=NYU+petition</a></p>

USC tried a petition also- it didn't go very far-

I did, and all I've heard since is silence...

I sent them a comment too regarding SC's wonderfulness.

If anything they would probably add Tufts next.

I agree with pretty much everything that's been said -- except I have absolutely no clue why you'd mention the football team as part of this equation unless you are also going to bring up vaunted USC alumna Annabel Chong:

<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annabel_Chong%5B/url%5D">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annabel_Chong</a></p>

Go Trojans!

That's gross, Bedhead. (Unless what you are really getting at is USC's #1 film school ranking).
To not transferable: as of today, USC has 40,647 posts and Tufts has 11,483 posts. The level of demonstrated interest is not comparable.

non transferable- I'd love to hear your reasoning about Tufts.

This should be fun:)

Or, at least it will keep this thread at the top so we can get more people to send in requests for USC!

No, but it was subtle ridicule of mentioning the number 1 football team which has no bearing on the focus of CC, IMO. Though it is true that USC's vaunted film school has launched the career of many porn directors.

By the way, there's no way USC shouldn't be on the top list, IMO. I am just needling your reasons.....

Oh, and I consider NYU the number 1 film school.

I'm also a Tufts advocate, but I'm here to say that the CC admins have basically told me in writing that the Top Unis list is somewhat random and is not really going to be changed anytime soon. For no particuarly good reason, as far as I could tell.

NYU's film school may be very very good, there is no denying that, but I think many (you don't have to be a Trojan to agree) believe USC's School of Cinematic Arts is the best in the nation.

This fact always amazes me. It seems like this website is frequently trapped in time, failing to acknowledge USC's role as a leader in higher education, although the school has served this role for quite a while now.

I emailed contact people about this fact, as there is no reason that USC should not be listed as a Top University. I'm not a huge fan of USN&WR Rankings, but even in those rankings, USC is now listed higher than schools listed as CC Top Universities.

Who cares? It's just a website. People come here for the discussion, not to check out which schools CC lists as top universities.

Reason for Tufts:

Having a good football team and a lot of posts by itself does not make a "top" school. The CC top school list doesn't seem to be random, rather it follows US News. Call it east coast bias, but even though USC and Tufts rank closely, I think they would still go for the latter first. Just my speculation.
