Why is AP Statistics so hard to understand?

I have always gotten A’s in math classes but somehow I have a D now in AP Statistics just because I got a 9% on a quiz once from one section of the textbook that I completely do not understand. Math is my strongest subject in school. I probably can get an A or B in honors precalculus but and that’s not hard but AP statistics is so hard. How can I get my grade up in that class? I want to take it just because I probably will eventually have to take statistics in college for my major. Should I take it now or drop the class and take it later in college? I have gotten a 50% and a 9% on two quizzes in the class and we have a test next week. I have a 3.99 Gpa and by getting a D in the class, it would drop my GPA a lot. I feel like I would be much better off taking AP Calc but I’m a year behind in the math curriculum.

I feel similar. Stat doesn’t feel like a typical math class and the grading has so many tricky restrictions. I definitely liked calc better, but it’s up to you to decide if you could do any better in there…

Talent in math is always nice. In stead, statistics involves gathering and analyzing information/data to enable decision making including there is no better choice. Focus first on the question and what data you have, then you can select the best method of answering the question. After that, the best strategy for answering the question is determined and a computer does the calculations. Then you review the computer results to determine the answer to your question and whether that information answers the question with enough confidence to make the decision. Think about the questions, the kind of information you have, constraints and so on. Math doesn’t really become an issue until you need to translate that I formation into numbers and letting the computer work. There are other ins and outs, of course, but think about the problem and whether you get sufficient support to answer the question with some comfort. Don’t beat yourself up by thinking statistics is a form of math. Relax. What do you need to kno
