Why is CC considered to be the place for the cream of the crop?

So I keep reading everywhere that CC kids' stats are generally better than the rest of the population, that most of the people here are the brightest, etc., but I was wondering why? I've seen quite a few people that are incredibly well-rounded and seemingly perfect that aren't on CC, and some people who don't have the best stats on CC. Even though I'm looking at extremes, why is it that in general CC kids are seen as extremely bright?

um cause people who have really good stats want to get into the most elite schools.

its not hard to figure out how to get into a school like rutgers, arizona state, or umass. But its much harder to figure out how to get into schools like brown, chicago, and vanderbilt. I find most people who are mediocre students just apply to the public school of their respective state and get in. Thats good enough for them. whats there to discuss?

like jags said, mediocre students don't worry about college admissions

There are lots of average level kids on CC. No one notices them though. They are either intimidated to make a chances thread, or know what they want for college already. Most CCers focus on the people with fewer than 10 posts who come on for a few days to make some chances threads then leave. While the Ivys have the most posts in their sub forums, other upper level colleges (USNWR ranked 50-100) will get some good activity too.

Furthermore, generally anxious, concerned, focused, and eager students usually equates to overachieving students (though, obviously not alwasy the case), so CC is composed of a self-selective pool of students reaching for the best, though as Venkat said, there are also average students just as concerned and eager about their future education, so...

Also, the people you see most often on this site are those with amazing stats who lurk on the Ivy league forums and flood them with their neurotic, anxious posts (people like myself).

Also, CC's a pretty harsh environment if you're newcomer. Most of those who persist with CC after a while, learn the ropes, etc, tend to be with higher stats. I'd agree with the posters above though, that there is a significant population with so called 'average stats' (Though in CC terms that could be anything from a 1700 to a 2100 SAT. :)). However, there is also a population of extreme high achievers, which are present here in percentages that are extremely, extremely skewed.

In fact I think it's this fact about CC that attracts some of the top students in the country/world to come here, knowing they'll meet people as, if not more qualified than they are.

There are a rare breed of us that actually flood those large public state schools' threads as well. =)

heh. Hopefully I won't get burned for that one.

Normal students have lives.

well you want to b normal and get the normal/average 27,000 bucks per year the normal/average American gets then that is fine...it's a good thing we aren't normal because if we were we would be stuck in a trailer park in Mississippi with Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn which is not what we want to do (although that would have been extremely fun if i could).

I frankly think lives are overrated. Most people here have certain passions that they follow, regardless of what others think. :)

Yep--it's true. Sooo many people post on CC that they've received likely letters and scholarships. Someone on the Yale thread calculated that an insanely high percentage of Yale likelies were on CC...I forget what it was exactly but it shows that CC is a genius magnet lol.

One very common way that people first find their way to CC is that someone gets a good PSAT score and the kid and/or parent starts wondering what the NMSF cut-off is for their state. A Google search on the topic will almost always quickly lead you to CC. So right off the bat CC is attracting kids that are beginning to compile high stats. However, there are also plenty of "regular kids" and their parents here as well.

I think my daughter is an above average student (B is above average, right?) but she's definitely below average in comparison with most of the students on CC. She still wants to go to college and the information on this site is very helpful.

90% of CC is in the top 15%
90% of CC got a 1900 or better on SATs
90% of CC got a 27 or better on ACTs
90% of CC gets accepted into a school in the top 50 colleges in America (including Liberal Arts)
90% of CC gets some kind of award during their high school career.
90% of CC gets an average of a 700 in every SAT and SAT 2 category
90% of CC are IB diploma candidates or take more than 4 APs during high school
90% of CC average a 4 or higher on all APs taken
90% of CC got above a 200 on their PSAT

(and this is me being nice, people who look great on paper are attracted to this site while people who don't look so hot on paper just don't come back)

really sheed? did you know that 75% of statistics are made up on the spot ;)?

jk dude (although I don't dig the fact that you still like sheed...move on its Brandon Roy/LaMarcus Aldrige time now!)

thanks for the replies guys!

Lol B-Yoy and Aldridge and Webster and Randolph are all great but nothing will ever compare to Rasheed Wallace, Bonzi Wells, Damon Stoudamire, Scottie Pippen, Arvydas Sabonis, Dale Davis, and Derek Anderson.. EVER...greatest roster in the history of the NBA (and the highest paid ever as well)

and California love...those were made up but i am thinking they are accurate...lol tell me what u think...

haha thats why they never one an NBA title correct? I think the lakers are best even though I'm from P-Town just because they have all my favs except MJ. But yeah, I'll take Kobe, Shaq, Fisher, Horry, etc. over the Jail Blazers anyday. And I haven't even mentioned the showtime lakers yet

Dude..you forget about Drexler's days..and LA got lucky in Conference Finals in 2001.. Game 7 and P-town up by 15...c'mon now..they were hacking sheed and no-one was calling it!!!!
