On the website it says the total cost of attendance for out of state students is about 42,000 and my financial report says mine is 45,100. I am not eligible for any scholarships because I applied after November 1st. I don’t know what to do I don’t know how I’m going to pay, I just don’t see why the cost on the website is lower than the one on my report. Is there a discrepancy here?
Does the report break the number down into categories? Is it including optional/additional costs like books, travel, and activities? Or is there a fee there that’s not listed on the website?
Maybe 45,000 is the cost they are projecting for 2017-2018.
Are you saying you can pay $42,000 but not $45,000?
Or is this school unaffordable…
It’s an OOS public,for you. You can take,the $5500 Direct Loan…but…
Do,you have other affordable options?
if you failed to file for FA on time, doesn’t it matter if it is $42k or $45k? You can’t pay either way.
Are you instate for Indiana? If not…that one could be unaffordable, too. OOS cost there is about $48,000 a year.
Free advice…start paying attention to deadlines. You can see that there are problems when you don’t adhere to them.
You can borrow 5.5k. If 45k is unaffordable so is 42k.
To answer your question : The discrepancy is likely due to 2016 costs vs. 2017 expected costs.
What’s your parents’ budget?
Where have you applied and where have you been admitted?
Some colleges still accept applications, it may be worth it to send an application - St Michael’s, Gustavus Adolphus, drake, augustana Illinois, Hendrix, Penn State branches (for 2+2) still accept applications.
What’s instate for you? Apply to all instate schools that still accept applications.
Apply to schools that have the potential to be affordable. Otherwise…it could be wasted money.
<<< I don’t know what to do I don’t know how I’m going to pay, I<<<<
You seem to be concerned about something that doesn’t matter.
Are you saying that you or your family can cover the $42,000 per year, but can’t cover the $45,000 per year?
Who would have been paying the $42k per year if the school lowered its costs to that???
You have to realize that most schools increase their costs every year. The amount you see on the website during your senior year of high school is not going to be the price you will be charged for the next four years.
Also schools make assumptions about dorms, food plans, extra expenses, etc., in the estimates that are not really accurate for each student. You need to look at the costs closely to see which you can save on. For example you can choose a less expensive dorm or rent your books instead of buy them.
But really…if $45,000 is NOT affordable…is $42,000 affordable??
IU cost of attendance for full-time undergraduates, 2016–17 academic year
Indiana University cost of attendance. Actual costs vary by student, based on student choice, travel habits, and academic program.
Indiana residents Nonresidents
Tuition and fees $10,388 $34,246
Room and board* $10,040 $10,040
Books and supplies* $1,290 $1,290
Total direct costs $21,718 $45,576
Transportation* $984 $984
Personal expenses* $2,106 $2,106
Cost of attendance $24,808 $48,666
I got the above off of the IU website for the CURRENT school year. 2017-18 will likely have a higher cost.
I don’t know where you saw $45k. It may not have included personal expenses.
(Crazy that instate and OOS have the same transportation estimate)
Purdue is expensive OOS . . . that’s the bottom line (barring scholarships which I do not think are automatic, or abundant, at Purdue). Once you hit the $40K+ level per year, does $3K make that big a difference? Not to pooh-pooh $12K (over 4 years) but at that point you have already spent quite a bit.
From the Purdue Website for 2016-2017…likely higher in 2017-2018
Oops…don’t know why I had IU on the brain…
It looks like Purdue also has a high price on its website.
NYgirl…can you show us the link with the lower cost quoted?
Actually…the Purdue price for THIS year is about what she quoted. BUT she will be attending 2017-2018…and likely, Purdue added in the increased cost for NEXT year.
But really…is $42,000 affordable? More affordable than $45,000?
The only reason I would pay that much for school was if it was to be a surgeon or something. Don’t get yourself into massive amounts of debt for school. In the end a job comes down to experience more so than what school you got a degree from. Yes, in some cases it can be helpful but in most cases it isn’t worth it to doom yourself financially once you graduate. A loan payment is going to get old real fast. In total you should try keep loans under $40k for all four years.
In another thread you were asking about outside scholarships. You’re unlikely to fund a significant amount from outside sources. I understand it’s disappointing not to be able to afford an OOS school, but if the money’s not there you have to start looking at Plan B.
How much can your parents pay per year without borrowing? Do you have any affordable in state options?
