I need help making the argument that TT is better than UT.

What is your criteria for “better”?

And what is the reason for wanting to make the argument?

Well…this is going to be a challenge….

TT is more affordable: Average Net Price after Grants:
TT: $10,351
UT-A: $14,629

And that’s all I can come up with…

http://www.■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/search1ba.aspx?institutionid=228778,229115

You might be able to demonstrate that TT is a better fit for your student, but extremely hard as far as academics. Most students who qualify for an automatic admission at any Texas school end up picking Austin (or TAMU) unless they have ties to Lubbock. The process is somewhat reversed when it comes to students who did not qualify.

Unless the student is admitted to one of the sought-after direct medical school programs, the chances to make a solid argument is quite low. But again, there might be ways to show that the school offers a better fit in terms of climate (hard with Lubbock) or school atmosphere, including acceptance by other students.

In the end, what is better rests in the eyes of the beholder.

I have a friend who was a professor for many years (engineering) at A&M. He said if he had kids to send to college again he would send them to Tech. He thinks the honors program is very underrated and that the size of the university offers a better chance for personal attention. He thinks both the 2 bigger schools are just too overwhelmingly huge and tangled in red tape. So- there’s that.
I spent a fair amount of time in Lubbock earlier in my career (didn’t live there) and it wasn’t just thrilling, to be honest, but I think Tech is a solid university with some strong programs. Better than UT? Hard sell there.

MOWC, I am not sure that the OP made a reference to TTU Honors College.
http://www.depts.ttu.edu/honors/index.php

My read, which might be incorrect, is that it was a reference to the CAS or what could be considered “general admissions” at both schools by defaulting all the admits who were not admitted to a Honor program or specific majors in business or engineering. It has been years since I looked at the finer prints of the programs, but I think that the CAS is still operating on a similar basis.

The size of the programs at Texas and TAMU are indeed an issue, but one that is precisely mitigated by a number of Honors’ programs.

The reason for making the argument… My daughter is going go to TTU. She was also excepted to UT. For whatever reason her fathers side of the family is poo pooing that she is going to TT instead of UT. She’s going for English /Lit. I feel that TT is a better fit for her and that she’ll still get a great education. I would like to know if TT’s liberal arts is better than UT.

Not familiar with the Liberal Arts at either school, although we all know that Austin is dang good in many, probably most, categories. With the liberal arts, I think it’s what you make of it. Suggest to your D that she research the publishing record and overall careers of the Literature faculty at Tech.

The English courses at each school are listed here:
http://www.depts.ttu.edu/officialpublications/courses/ENGL.php
http://www.utexas.edu/cola/depts/english/courses/

What does she think?

You are wise to help your daughter pick the school that offers the best fit. You are also right that she will get a great education in Lubbock. The last part should be a lot less important to you, and fwiw probably impossible to find much support for in Texas. While you might claim that the departments could be equally good, trying to convice many that TTU is better would raise plenty of eyebrows.

Go for the best fit and do not look back!

The English Department and creative writing program at UT are significantly more distinguished than at Texas Tech. Sorry. Trying to prove that TT is “better” in that sense is hopeless.

On the other hand, the school may be a better fit for your D, for some reason, and I’m sure she can get a decent education there.

Yeah, I would just go with the fit argument.

Just make sure your daughter becomes a part of the TTU Honors College. The you can say it will be better.
