Its over 15000 for a single, and 12000 for a triple!!! wth....I guess they don't want poor students to live there and forcing us to walk 20 miles and live off campus and miss out. Lame =(

Because the TC uses the dorm rates that require the more expensive 5day or 7day meal plan. Village and UTC are cheaper because they don’t require meal plans. The apartments can be cheaper because they allow you to get the 55-meal plan. Those of us who are continuing students and living in the dorms are able to pay the previous year’s rates (for example, I’m paying 2009-2010 rates right now instead of 2010-2011… savings is more significant between those two than between 2010-2011 and 2011-2012, though).

And really, 20 miles is a HUGE exaggeration, but I get your point ;). Seriously speaking, though, there are tons of buses to campus plus shuttles around campus as well (UTC is off campus, Village is close to the base of campus). They’re not forcing you to live off campus (trust me, they want to fill every bed). Yeah, the costs are ridiculous, but UCSC is one of the most expensive campuses to live on in the country.

I’m poor, but I’ve lived on campus my entire time here in my affiliated college. Being on campus is a necessity because of one of my majors.

Honestly, if the cost is really too much, you should look into the cheaper housing options. You are guaranteed a single with Village if that’s what you want. I can’t imagine not living in a single and already have mine locked in for next year. I almost chose Village when I transferred just for the guaranteed single, but was able to luck out with one in my college. There is also a tool you can use through the university to find off campus housing that’s near campus.

Housing is just expensive here. It’s expensive around the city as well, but definitely more expensive on campus.
