Why is there no Spanish minor at Notre Dame?

I want to continue becoming fluent in Spanish, but I am not interested in the major courses (a lot of literature). This is the only school I've come across that offers a major (but not a minor) in this language. Why doesn't Notre Dame offer a minor in Spanish?

I believe it’s because they think if they began offering the minor, the department would be overwhelmed with the large number of students who took Spanish in high school who want to boost their resume with an easy minor. I think they want to focus on the students who are more serious about studying the language and choose to major in it. I think for a similar reason they also do not allow seniors to start out in beginning Spanish courses (that’s sort of what I was told when I tried, anyway…).

I don’t think you’d have any trouble continuing study Spanish at ND, you just wouldn’t be given credit for it as a minor.

Thank you very much for the reply! I have a strong feeling you’re right about this. It does frustrate me a little, because it would be an “easy” minor only because I worked ahead in high school. I wish that wasn’t a penalty.

I do appreciate your response, thank you!

Also, if you don’t wish to pursue a full major, they have a supplemental major in Spanish, which is less credits.

That is true. I’m considering that, but I feel like as long as I’d be taking 8 classes in Spanish, I might as well go all in and take two more for the standalone major. I’m still debating whether it’s worth it to do either…

Thank you for your replies!
