Why Me?

My counselor won't let me add ONE more class...

I have a 3.98 UW and I get off at 12:30 on Mondays and Wednesdays, and yet he won't let me add one class...

He lets some other people do it.

But I feel like I can't argue or try to reason with him as I did in the past to add classes (that I can obviously handle) because he says he is proud of me, that I have gotten over my blind ambition, that I've matured and our relationship has come a long way...Who can argue with THAT?

I'm taking 7 classes. Should I just accept it? I guess...but still. O_O I just hate that he lets other people do it...:[

Sorry.yeah, this was a rant.

argue with him. tell him that if he respects you or is proud of you, then he should do you a favor.
if you want to take the class, it should be worth it.

I would argue it if he's letting other people do it, and has no good reason not to let you take more.

I'm so glad my counselor isn't like that.

I am so tempted to argue, but I am afraid he won't write a good counselor rec for me, which I know is kind of wrong, but I think it is a legitimate fear.

If I take the class (since it is a CC class, I can also ask the principal or vice principal to sign the form allowing me to take it), he won't know, right?

Now, he can only sign us up for classes. He doesn't see our grades and can't drop us, so how would he know I was even taking a class...right? O_o...

You may want to switch counselors, if at all possible -- it sounds like he sees you as dysfunctional, as a case that needs fixing. Who's he to judge your maturity or the validity of your ambitions?

your fear of having a bad counselor rec isn't that important. do you go to a large public school? if so, the counselor rec nearly meaningless, because colleges will assume that the counselor barely knows you because it's overcrowded.

Just go to the principal and have him get you in then.

Thing is, there is only one counselor at my school - it's very small.

Armando - That's what I think I am going to do. It's easier if I just ask her, and I know she'll say yes.

If your school is easy and they're not letting you have one more class, why dont you just self-study an AP you're interested in? You could pick one you like and it would probably be harder than whatever course they let you take.

If you really want to take the class, let him know. Explain why you want to take the class. Let him know that it isn't blind ambition that motivates you to take the class (even if that may not be true).

Just self-study! Our school is notorious for only allowing us to take 6 academic classes in a semester (minus mandatory religion and study hall in a 8-period day), but it didn't stop students from supplementing their academic load through other means.

Seven classes should be enough. I have to side with your GC here, sorry.

Aren't most schools like that? Almost all of them around here are.

Yeah. I mean, there aren't any APs I'm interested in that I'm not taking. I think I can just hang out in the library and study a subject I like or read. It'll be nice to do some independent learning, even if I'm not getting credit or anything for it.
