I know that the Common App doesn’t open for Fall 2016 applications until August 1, but I’m moving in September and want to finish up my ED application for NYU Tisch before that happens, just in case things get hectic. I’m writing my supplement on Word and transferring it over when the Common App opens. This is what I have so far:
Prompt: What can NYU offer you, and what can you offer NYU?
“NYU offers a BFA in my major: Dramatic Writing. [balance redacted]”
I was originally under the impression that the essay was to be fewer than 250 words, which is why it feels so condensed. I’m working on expanding the second paragraph. Also, I know that I’ve only answered half of the prompt so far, but I’m struggling to answer “what can you offer us” without sounding really full of myself. Suggestions?
MODERATOR’S NOTE:
It is never a good idea to post your entire essay online. If you want to ask other members if they would be willing to read and comment on your essay via PM, that is totally fine.

We do not know you so we cannot guess what type of contribution you can make. The school wants to get to know you. What unique perspective or talent can you offer? You can state fact without being “full of yourself”.
My bad, I worded my original post poorly. I’m looking for edits on what I’ve written so far. I completely understand that I have to come up with the rest of the essay on my own.
FYI you should never post one of your essays online!!! First of all, this essay is now 100% public to anyone, so it could easily be stolen. Second, I’ve heard that some schools have online programs to check if an essay is plagiarized. So if you submitted your essay they could easily find this copy online that you just posted and assume that you completely copied it. I’m pretty sure that would result in being taken out of the applicant pool. I would contact one of the site moderators to delete this post… I know that in the college essay forum there’s a warning that says if you want essay readers you should only PM your essay to trusted CC members. Once again, you should ask one of the moderators to delete your post
Hey @Rougarou I was accepted to NYU and am going to go there this fall. I remember writing this essay very well - At first I was stumped then everything started to click together. This was my favorite essay i wrote of all the supplemental essays i had.
If you want me to read your essay i would be more than happy to do so! Hopefully ill see you at NYU in the fall of 2016! You can pm me
For my “Why NYU” essay, I split it into two paragraphs. The first dealt with why I specifically wanted to go to NYU and why I felt it was a good choice for me, while the second paragraph consisted of me explaining what I have to offer to NYU, as the prompt asks.
My advice would be to be honest. Don’t try to suck up to the admissions committee and say “Oh, NYU is such an amazing school!!!”; instead, talk about what makes it amazing in your eyes. For me, that was the chance to explore the city and get to know my roots again while getting an amazing education.
For the “what can you offer NYU” portion, also be honest. Be humble. If you haven’t done anything awe-inspiring yet, come clean and say that. NYU isn’t just looking for amazing students, they’re looking for amazing people with amazing potential.
If anyone needs help or has any questions about NYU, feel free to message me.
