Why Self-Study for an AP Exam when you don't talk the class in school?

For college credit.

Or for some, the sick and twisted pleasure of trying to fill up your AP grade report.

Because you have a sincere interest in the subject in the hand, have a good commitment, and want to have a sort of path to follow so that you know that you covered what you need to, and that you get credit.

to get an ap award (ie, ap national scholar) by the end of junior year.

to challenge yourself beyond what is available at your school.

For college credit, duh.

To challenge yourself?? No, its for college credit. Oh yeah, and that award.

s0 ur fwenz tink ur s0p3mr smrt!!!1111 lololz

wait...what?

sophmore standing.

what do you need in order to qualify for AP National Scholor and will that look good on a resume?

A 4 or higher on all exams taken or an average of 4 on more than eight exams.

It will definitely look good if you have a majority of 5s, but it is not conisdered a hook or anything like that. It is just a good award to have.

Not a hook? aww. still, only 87 people got it last year (as a jr) and That, in my book, is quite an achievement.

Read for example: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=34052&highlight=national+scholar+juniors

danielsjang, that was before the collegeboard changed the ap national scholar requirements. Now 330-350 people per year get it, which is still relatively few, but a lot more than before.

why self study?

to show wharton that i have a love in learning and i can succeed without guidance

(well, i really do wanna learn it :D )

cuz u have no life

vtran31: didn't you like self-study a bunch and take like 12?

the one and only

I should self study 10 next year just so i can be the ultimate loser.

Some self-study because they live in a rural area in the middle of no-where and the course isn't offered at school.

Others self-study the AP material when they fear that they will not do very well on the respective IB exam (according to US universities) and get practically no credit for years of work. Of course, US universities require the top score on an IB exam... ~6-7% receive the top IB grade while ~25% will receive the top AP grade. Much better odds says I!

:( I wish I self studied for some AP's or took the classes online. I never knew how competitive it was until I came to this site, b/c The most AP's I know someone taking in Jr. Year is 1 or 2 max.
