Why send AP score reports?

When the College Board mails you your score report, it gives you the option to send them to colleges. I thought you self-reported AP scores, so what's the point of sending in scores?

It can self-report them for purposes of applying for admission. You have to have CB send official AP score reports to your college of choice after you have been admitted and accepted if you want college credit for your AP courses.

Do you know why it gives you the option to send it to multiple colleges?

It is if you want colleges to see them. The multiple college thing is really unnecessary, as you said. Maybe CB sees it as a good way to make an extra $15 per score report when people send them when they don’t need to!

Why the need to send out score reports to multiple colleges? You’re only going to attend one ;). To reiterate what drusba said: in senior year of high school, you send an official CB score report to the college you’ll be attending in the fall so that the APs can be considered for college credit. For college admission purposes, self reporting is sufficient. No need to send in official CB reports.

What’s more, the department in the college handling AP scores is often separate or completely different from the admission department. There’s a good chance that your score will end up in the department dealing with matriculating student affairs, not on your admission officer’s desk.
