Why Stanford is Good Place, Ok to bash Berkeley?

I really wish people would stop associating Berkeley with something like "smelly hippie"-- I have yet to see a hippy on Berkeley's campus, and students tend to wear Abercrombie more than Tye-dye t's. Having been on both Stanford and Berkeley campuses (and having spent a frequent amount of time at UCB), I can say that they actually both have a similar feel. The Berkeley culture is the Bay Area culture (abeit maybe a bit to the extreme). They're both excellent schools, and if you dislike Berkeley's atmosphere, the Bay might not be the right area for you.

What? Really? To me, Stanford "feels" like an 19th century hacienda while Berkeley "feels" like a post-modern space ship.

....................

Uhh how can an awesome campus with pretty grass everywhere and rolling hills and crisp, clean weather feel like a post-modern space ship? -_-

you mean grass surrounded by sidewalks with beggars and mountains too tough to climb on foot?

In my letter to my future dorm mate, I talked about how Stanford took the ax back from Cal this year and was excited to be apart of that next year. I'm assuming that's not a bad thing to write?

You obviously haven't been to Berkeley much...

... or you like to focus on the negative aspects.

yup only been there once, but it was a very negative visit. raining everywhere, but rain in Stanford was serene. in UC, it was a maelstrom.

Oh, come on. Are you really complaining about the weather of a school IN CALIFORNIA?!

I've only been to Stanford once. While I was there, I saw various rude students, workers who could barely speak English and didn't seem to know anything about the Stanford campus and thus couldn't give directions, some people suntanning in the middle of a supposedly beautiful lawn (it wasn't a pleasing sight), bikes tossed into bushes, wheels chained to stands (i.e. the bikes were stolen), some guys fooling around on a bike and filming it (made me wonder how they got into Stanford), it was very chilly for mid-May, etc.

... but no, I'm not using that as a basis to make negative judgments about Stanford. =)

lol calm down!

i really wasn't making a negative judgment. more like an observation that really constrasted with the statement above mine (just like the observations you just shared about Stanford)

i applied to both. hopefully i get into one... :)
