At the closer of my essay, is it appropriate to place something along the lines of " and Stanford does not attract smelly hippies as does Berkeley?'

No, that just makes you seem like a fool.

As luck might have it, your reader may very well have been an authentic true blue 60's hippy with fond memories of that time!

Joking aside, NEVER disparage another school.

Ok I already submitted and I took it out before I got replies figured it was not good taste.

Funny, I wrote a short answer on Woodstock...

At one of the sessions, a Stanford adcom I met told us that he went to college "across the Bay." You'd better hope he's not getting your essay.

^AHAHHA. nice

Yeah, as others said, it's probably not a good idea to bash Berkeley. While the students may rival one another, the administration at Stanford respects Cal much, and vice versa, as they realize they're peer institutions, easily on par with one another. Gerhard Casper, in his complaint to US News, even calls for Cal's placement in rankings near Stanford.

Criticism of College Rankings - September 23, 1996

A little old, but I think the current administration has a similar attitude, as would the admissions committee. Plus, I'm sure they're well aware that a very large number of their applicants are also applying to Berkeley. =)

"smelly hippies as does Berkeley" ... lol
That's one reason I didn't apply to the UC system!

^ I applied to Berkeley...

i have a good friend that is a true CAL that applied to Stanford last year just to bash Stanford in one of his essays. His dad is the guy that scored the touchdown during The Play, he obviously did not get in.

Bashing Berkeley like that is just dumb. The two institutions are both incredibly prestigious in their own rights, and as kyledavid stated before, the two administrations carry a lot of respect for one another. The two schools collaborate much more than people may think...a trivial athletic rivalry is no raeson for you to hate on Cal.

I wouldn't do that simply out of the risk that someone reading your application is a Berkeley graduate. They didn't all go to Stanford, you know...

hec2008, you can't be serious?! You're friends with the kid whose dad scored THE touchdown of The Play???? Wow...

Exactly -- I see many times when a discovery is made by researchers at Stanford and Berkeley. Example:

Stanford's nanowire battery holds 10 times the charge of existing ones

The Play?

Would someone care to enlighten me?

Youtube it.

YouTube - Cal - Stanford 1982 Big Game

Pretty much the most amazing thing ever.

Wow, I see!

I think I did put in my essay that a beggar attacked me in "golden bear country" in my intro. but my essay was just kind of weird/symbolistic and i never meant it as an insult to berkeley (my cousin went there! supposedly a great school but i just went there on a bad day)
