Why SUNY Stony Brook?

Remember, it was an empty room in an old dorm. It had small high windows and a bare mattress on a steel frame. It probably looks a lot better when you decorate it and add rugs and wall hangings. Also, the newer dorms are nicer. If you deposit early, you get a choice.

@lil
Thank you for clarifying. I need to my own research, it seems. I’ve been so consumed with my first choice, that I undermined Stony Brook and didn’t really look much into dorm life and those aspects. Thank you again. Best of luck to your son.
@TheBombing / @anyonewhoattendsSBU:
How do you feel about the dorm? Which dorms do you suggest? What are some things to expect?

I know I may be a bit pushy with the questions, please bare with me - I am a bit anxious to graduate High School and continue with my life at a higher institution.

I am in Tabler Quad and I love it! It is set off from the main road so you don’t get any traffic sounds and it was an old apple orchard so it is very pretty. They probably showed you something in Mendelsohn Quad which is Corridor style. If you don’t like “prison style” I would recommend suite style. I had a great suite this past semester and it leads to a much more social environment but also let’s you have a personal study/relaxation area. I don’t mind the questions, I love helping out prospective students.

@TheBombing
Thanks a lot, I will definitely have to visit this page a lot more frequently know. As you say past semester, does this mean that you change your dorm every semester or every year? Also, since I haven’t applied to the Honors College, and am VERY interested in it, is there a way that I can still gain acceptance there by transferring mid-year or is it a bit too late?

You can request a room change if you would like it but you get to stay where you are through the school year. You can possibly call the Honors College office to ask if you can send in the required info to apply now but you can get in sophomore year as well.

@jb
You should definitely consider Stony Brook. I understand that you care about the social aspect of college a lot, however, I don’t think you should judge Stony Brook without visiting it. Good luck :)

@TheBombing
Is Greek life prevalent here? I may be interested in rushing, not too sure. Just curious.
@Awsome
yes of course, I do. I have to live it up, since this is the first glimpse of the “real world.” Thank you.

Greek life is at about 15% of the student population. If you are looking for partied they are there on Thur-Sat nights at the SAC loop but again you are there to get an education not party so people honestly aren’t that wild or anything, especially when compared to places like Bing and Cortland.

@TheBombing
Oh yes I’m fully aware of that. I want to join a frat not for the party but the value, and brotherhood aspect. Believe me, education is top priority for me.

Just letting you all know that I’m really enjoying this discussion. Carry on. :)

Chris

Alrighty Chris, thanks! I’m telling it as it is at SBU. For curiosity I saw you as an announcer at an athletic event this past semester, I don’t remember which one, but do you work for the Athletic Dept. as well as the Admissions Office?

Chris, any idea when admissions decisions will be released? Stony Brook is my son’s first choice.

@Chris
Hello! I actually have 2 questions for you sir:

  1. Is it too late to be considered for the Honors College? I feel as if I have a chance, however maybe since I already sent out my application it could hinder the efforts of the admissions staff.
    2)On the status checker, it has on my todo list; a transcript from my old school. I was in one school for my freshman year, then I transferred to my current school for 10th-12th. What does this mean? Is Freshman year truly considered? I received an email, saying that all my information has been received; and if SBU needs anything in addition they will email me - this being said, I never received an email; does this mean I’m all set. I’m a bit worried that the admissions office doesn’t have everything for my application. Please Chris, alleviate me from my agony.

Thank you.

Been a while Chris, where have you been? There’s a lot of people with questions needing to be answered. :). Also, it would be very nice to know when the decisions are coming out.

UH-OH. I’VE BEEN SPOTTED. :)

No, I don’t work for athletics. I’ve been the voice of the marching band halftime show for the past couple of seasons, though.

To address the questions: the deadline for HC has passed, but if you fill out the form on the honors page on our site and get it to us ASAP, then we can get the HC added to your application.

jb - If it’s just ninth grade, don’t worry about it. We’ll fix it in review and you won’t have to submit it.

First round of decisions will be… well… soon. Very soon. And we send out batches of decisions – admits AND denies – every two weeks or thereabouts. There’s NO connection between when you applied and when you’ll hear.

I’ll be around. :)

Chris

My son was accepted to Stony Brook for Fall 2014 and we were wondering when the information will be sent out for Honors College acceptance? We hear that it will be in March but Binghamton has a March 3rd deadline for him to accept their scholar/honor college invitation and we would like to see what Stony Brook has to offer. Is there any chance that information will be sent out before that March 3rd BU deadline? If not would it be advisable to call and speak with someone in the HC as I am sure we are not the only families with the same dilemma.
I myself am a proud Stony Brook alumni (1990) and the thought of my son attending just makes me so thrilled, but it will ultimately be his choce with Cornell still a possibility. Stony Brook is an exceptional school with endless possibilites. Don’t listen to all of the rumors about it not being social etc., those same rumors were flying around in the mid-80’s and my experience and that of my many life-long friends and USB gradutes was quite the opposite and believe it or not there was NO Seawolf or Division 1 sports at that time…lol Good Luck to all!

March 15th was the date for last year for the notification and I think it is going to be at least past the first week of March. Why does Bing expect a response that early?

Honors decisions come out in mid-March as they always have. And Binghamton shouldn’t force you to deposit before May 1.

Chris

@Chris
Being an international student, I am excited to hear from SBU. When should I expect my decision?

Do Freshmen have a choice in dorming? And Im kind of confused as to the relationship between UG college (ie.Society and Science) and dorms.
