why the hell does it matter?

What is our point in this universe. We keep doing crap and nothing really seems to have a point in it..

In the end however big the numerator is the denominator is ALWAYS ∞... The universe is ∞ big and nothing we do really has a point.

So why do we care? You tell us.

Also tell me what you find most important.

In the end I believe having sex and developing a strong relationship with someone is the most important. That is the only thing that has some meaning to it. Every thing else is... well... pointless... right?

Don't worry I am not committing suicide and I still plan on going to ivies and becoming rich. This just went through my mind.

This is the burden of being human. Other animals don’t have to have thoughts like this.

I’m sure philosophers much more qualified than you since thousands of years ago pondered the same questions. Yet life still goes on. Now, what is the point of this thread is a good question.

I was just wondering what you guys thought.

hey i was just thinking about this today. you’re very right. and the thought is slowly driving me insane

don’t forget the babies

You should have a word with Berger.

Simple hedonism, with activities constrained by some regard for their effect on the lenght of time you get to practice it, is one sufficient justification for existense.

I am Christian. I think God has a plan for the Universe that includes man. Thankfully this plan includes sex, good food and liquor (in moderation).

I think about this question a lot… it really makes my skin crawl thinking about how time goes on to infinity.

I think christianity seeks to answer this question, and it bothers me that people can accept something so easily (and lazily to a point) without intellectually and critically thinking about the world around them (and that statement definitely isn’t limited to the OP’s question.)

Don’t get mad because the viola doesn’t matter.

There is no point. Just live life and do what makes you happy.

I think christianity seeks to answer this question, and it bothers me that people can accept something so easily (and lazily to a point) without intellectually and critically thinking about the world around them (and that statement definitely isn’t limited to the OP’s question.)

On the contrary, some of the greatest intellectuals ever known were in some way theistic. And religion in general seeks to answer this question, not just Christianity…

In the answer to the OP’s question: To me, it matters because I think it’s pretty fricking awesome that any of us [or this, collectively speaking] even exist/s. So it’s more about seeing what you can make of it all…

It is a test…at least according my religion.
One day, you and me will die. Some people will mourn, but then the world will eventually forget. There will be nothing left. Where we go from there is what matters.

In the end I believe having sex and developing a strong relationship with someone is the most important.

I agree with that statement, it is probably my life goal (more so the latter, although good sex is good!)

The same could be said about your theory.

You’re meaningless. You aren’t born with an overarching purpose in life. You see, people think that they’re born with a purpose in life - an unknowable goal set for them by a romanticized, unknowable and perhaps nonexistent god - those are the sheep of society who need someone to guide them through everything. To them, life is just a matter of doing what they’re told. Because the government, the school, the employers, or anyone else who makes the rules can’t tell some people what their purpose in life is (although they try), they look to a higher authority to give them a golden manuscript or an inscribed stone tablet or a 2,000 year old collection of short stories for a detailed description of what they should do in life. If you want to justify your existence that way, be my guest.

Or, you could create a meaning for yourself. You only live once, and the odds were against that, too. Think of every atom inside of you - why aren’t they rocks, dirt, water, air, metal, plants, or animals? There’s a lot more of that around than us, I can tell you that. You could have been anything - a dog, a squirrel, a tree, a fish - but here you are, a human being, sapient, self-aware, and able to do something meaningful. Not meaningful to the world, or the universe, but to yourself. The key is to stop thinking about things on a universal or even global scale. Set goals for yourself based on what you’d like to accomplish or even what you enjoy, and use those as the purpose of your life. The ultimate goal of your life should be your happiness, and accomplishing goals that you’re passionate about will make you happy. Against all odds, you exist - it’s time to do something about it instead of sitting around waiting for someone to tell you how.

yeah, i feel fine with the idea that everything is meaningless – i just live for the entertainment value.

to quote an eloquent kid i once overheard in the hallway, “i do everything for the lulz.”

My goal in life is to do what I please, for the benefit of humanity. Whether I end up being a doctor, or a researcher, I seek to improve mankind’s understanding of the Universe, and beyond. Of everything. Of string theory. Of the theory of everything. To scientifically and logically discover the hidden answers to these yet to be solved problems. to collaborate with other intellectuals, to be filled with passion about learning and researching.

Also that too.
and developing into a confident, secure (mentally, physically, sexually, financially), healthy, honest, polite, mannered, intellectual, smart, intelligent, hot, sexy, cool, awesome, respectful, individual

i <3 the philosophical-ness of this  anyone else ever get like a second long out-of-body moment? i do sometimes :p

it doesn’t matter.

Hmmmm, why do you believe that “having sex and developing a strong relationship with someone is the most important.” Or that “That is the only thing that has some meaning to it.”

In what way does it differ from any other action?

Oh, and please clarify what you mean when you say “meaning.” 'fraid I’m not familiar with the term.
